The Relevance of Complementary and Integrative Medicine in the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Qualitative Review of the Literature by Georg Seifert, et al - published in Frontiers in Medicine December 11, 2020. The authors analyzed data on the potential preventive and therapeutic health benefits of CIM (Complementary and Integrative Medicine). There were a wide variety of studies, interventions, outcomes identified and analyzed. The results show that CIM interventions appear to strengt...hen physical and mental health, acting as mitigating factors against the stressors caused by reduced social contact and self isolation during Covid. Seven different interventions in particular were shown to support our mental and physical health, including: (1) nutrition and vitamin supplementation, (2) Mind-Body Medicine, (3) positive attitude of life and relationships, (4) exercise, (5) nature therapy, (6) aroma therapy, (7) sleep medicine, and (8) botanical medicines. Cognitively-Based Compassion Training is classified as a Mind-Body Medicine with extensive peer-reviewed research already conducted (see https://www.santacruzcompassion.com/research ). As per this above-cited article, Mind-Body Medicine (MBM) interventions utilize the interactions between the brain, mind, body, and behavior to activate health-promoting pathways. For example, the neuroscience and meditational techniques that we find in CBCT help improve psychological parameters, reduce inflammation, improve immune function, facilitate regulatory systems, and improve resilience in general. The article in Frontiers in Medicine ( 12/20) offers more evidence for engaging in interventions such as Compassion training to support ourselves during these challenging times. In light of the recent violence at the Capitol, we are wise if we can take to heart the words of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr ~ returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Dr. King had also urged us to find compassion for others as he claimed compassion to be the only way to change society.
