One of RAW’s special s is recovering from recent brain surgery (8/14). Lori lost her eyesight at 12 years old due to a brain tumor. But, that never stopped h...er from living it up. She rode horses, hiked trails, volunteered with veterans at her school in Idaho, and recently received her associates degree. Lori loved coming to Santa Cruz to surf with RAW and would later become a volunteer and friend to all. She’s known for her willingness to get back on the board no matter how many times she wipes out, her contagious giggle, and witty comebacks!! Sadly, this new tumor affected her hearing and equilibrium. The good news is that she survived surgery and was able to speak and hear. The extent to which is TBD. Before her surgery, she said that she will work hard to regain her equilibrium so that she can walk again. She will undoubtedly have a long recovery ahead of her. She will surely enjoy hearing from her RAW family. I’ll be visiting her this weekend and will read your comments to her. Thanks xoxo ~ Julie Update: Lori is doing really well despite what she’s been through. The acoustic neuroma was fragmented, and because of that it caused hearing loss in one ear. She is in the process of relearning how to balance and her brain is learning to compensate for the damage to her equilibrium. Good news is that her cognition and snarky sense of humor is intact! She kept the night nursing staff on their toes asking for popsicles and ice cream. She is able to walk albeit * slowly* and is working hard to regain her physical independence. She was released after 3 days to outpatient hospital housing for a week. She’s heard all of your comments and she was overwhelmed with the outpouring of love from her RAW family near and far.
