Jaden Fong ’22 didn’t become a talented poet overnight, but the Santa Clara University English Department major believes anyone can try their hand at arranging thoughts and images into words that often soothe the soul. His efforts recently won him first place in two poetry contests, the Academy of American Poets Tamara Verga Poetry Prize, and tying for first with Nate Metz '23 in the Shipsey Poetry Prize. He made sure to submit a separate poem to Santa Clara Magazine's SCU In Quarantine story project. Read more #BoldBroncos

The system, SwingBeats, is a real-time haptic feedback system that helps users learn to dance I got so many amazing opportunities through this university, and made so many amazing connections with both peers and faculty who have really guided me along," she says. She will be joining the Public Health Department as an assistant professor with expertise in disparities in mental health care access and utilization, reduction in stigma barriers to care, and promotion of mental health and wellbeing in Latinx communities! Fun facts about Alice: She is a California native who’s survived living in two states over the past 7 years and is EXCITED to be back home in the Golden State! She is the first person ...in her family to get a college education and PhD, both of which are from cross-town rival schools! In the wake of the murder of George Floyd in spring of 2020, Sonja Mackenzie (Public Health) knew something had to be done to combat the ongoing racialized violence that exists in the country. So Mackenzie partnered with Sharmila Lodhia (Women’s and Gender Studies) to develop a seminar to educate and engage students on issues of structural racism. Recent graduates Natalie Rovero, Christian Jimenez, and Riley Scherr discovered the many ways research can benefit the scientific community and have each contributed to their fields of studyfrom looking at neural pathways and peptoids to exploring effects of fieldwork on agricultural workers. Due to their dedication and exceptional work in undergraduate research, these three seniors have been awarded the 2021 DeNardo Senior Prize. SCU Sociology Professor Molly King was quoted by The Atlantic about the effects of COVID-19 on female scientists. Burdens on women increased as the pandemic took hold, leaving women scientists less able to commit their time to learning about a new area of study, and less able to start a whole new research project, she said. Taking what's old and making it new - that's what Oliver Branham-Upton '24 (Environmental Studies) likes to do, and he put his expertise to use! Sourcing materials from the street, he built a table to play dominoes on during the shelter in place. As an Environmental Studies major and member of Santa Clara Cross Country/Track & Field, Branham-Upton also finds racial justice very important to him.
