Hi folks. The DART (Disaster Airlift Response Team) at San Martin airport is having its annual disaster preparedness exercise at the airport Saturday. Non-perishable food donations are requested from the surrounding community to be dropped off inside the south gate at the airport at 13030 Murpy Ave between 9:30 and 10:30 am. There will be a receiving crew to take the food donations, weigh them, load them in aircraft and fly them to a relief airport and back. A variety of flig...ht operations are planned to connect 29 bay area airports that day. Another 4 local Bay Area DARTs will be working, as well as one flying in from Torrance, and pilots flying in for support from as far away as San Diego. The exercise commemorates the 1989 Watsonville airlift after Loma Prieta when 0.5 million pounds of food and supplies was airlifted into Watsonville Airport for the isolated people of Watsonville and Santa Cruz. The DART has annual exercises so that it and the surrounding community are able to utilize General Aviation air services at large scale to assist the community in the event of a disaster which impairs surface transportation. Disaster flights can include food transport, first responder transport, family reunification, evacuation of fragile people (seniors, dialysis patients, oxygen users, similar) from the disaster zone. This year's food proceeds will be donated to the Gilroy Compassion Center. Second Harvest Food Bank of Silicon Valley and Joseph and Company from Yolo County are sending food in via air transport, and we hope the local community supports the exercise, too. In a real disaster, we could be bringing in food for the whole community. Thank you! See more
