SLA Employee Spotlight: December 2020 Jolene K (Full Time EMT) Jolene was born and raised in Pozo, California. After graduating from Atascadero High School, Jolene moved to Ventura to attend Ventura Community College where she majored in botany. Following Ventura Community College, Jolene moved back to San Luis Obispo county where she began developing an interest in EMS. She found EMS to be exciting and meaningful and wanted to pursue that career path. Jolene attended the Cu...esta College EMT Program and graduated in 2018. After graduation she was hired with SLA as a reserve EMT. With perseverance and a great work ethic, she quickly promoted to full time. Jolene mainly has worked at our north county stations, serving the tight knit community that she grew up in. In her off time, Jolene enjoys camping, hiking, studying botany, and gardening. We thank Jolene for her service to our community and congratulate her on her upcoming two-year anniversary here at SLA. See more

In August 2020, CHP Templeton Area Auto Tech, PETE KENNEDY, was diagnosed with Stage IV Colon Cancer and is currently undergoing aggressive treatment to battle this horrible disease. Pete, who is a single father of two wonderful daughters, has worked for the CHP for over 20 years and is a beloved member of the Shandon Community and CHP Templeton Area family. In an effort to help ease the financial burden associated with the ongoing medical treatment, the Templeton Area Squad ...Club 740, has organized a drive through Fundraiser BBQ and Raffle scheduled to be held on SUNDAY DECEMBER 13TH, at 11:00 am. Raffle tickets are being sold for $20 each or Seven for $100. Some GREAT raffle prizes (see below). Tickets can be purchased in person at the Templeton CHP and SLO CHP Offices, at Roosters Firearms in Templeton, or via Venmo @CHP-740 (Call office and leave contact info). SLA Employee Spotlight: October 2020 Michael K. (Full Time EMT) Michael was born in Newport Beach, CA and moved to Los Osos with his family in 1977. After graduating from Morro Bay High School, Michael immediately began working at Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center in their maintenance department. During his time working at the hospital, Michael began developing a passion for medicine. Like many of our staff members, Michael was trained as an EMT at Cuesta Community College.... Following the EMT program, Sierra Vista Regional Medical Center brought Michael on as their first ER Technician, assisting with triage of patients and other tasks in the emergency room. During his time as an ER Technician, Michael got married and had two children. He desired to further his career as an EMT and was hired with San Luis Ambulance (SLA) in 1994. Initially, Michael primarily worked in San Luis Obispo until SLA bought Five Cities Ambulance and transferred to the Arroyo Grande station. While working for SLA, Michael has been active in helping create a lot of what SLA is today. Michael was one of the first to help implement our new hire training academy as well as obtaining an EVOC instructor certification. Michael has also been active in teaching our new hire trainees how to drive our ambulances safely and how to navigate the Oceano Dunes in our 4-wheel drive ambulance. He has also assisted in hiring, been a member of the San Luis Obispo Clinical Advisory Committee, served as an EMT Division Supervisor, and worked as a company Training Officer. On his off time, Michael serves as the Safety Officer at New Life Community Church in Pismo Beach where he supervises all safety procedures and fire drills. Michael also assists with the New Life food pantry at his church which helps provide groceries to people in need. He also assists New Life Community Church as an emergency evacuation center with the Red Cross. As if that weren’t enough, Michael also leads a first responder support group, and coach’s youth sports. When not working on the ambulance or with the community, Michael enjoys being an avid Dodger’s fan, spending time with his kids, and travelling. We would also like to congratulate Michael on his 25th work anniversary with SLA. We are so honored and proud to have Michael as part of our SLA family and appreciate all the years he has dedicated to the community.

Our 1st Annual San Luis Ambulance Blood Drive was a complete success. With the help of our partners at Vitalant, we were able to donate enough blood to save 75 lives. This blood drive was our way of celebrating 75 years of service to the public and coincidentally happened to be the exact same number of lives saved. Thank you to all that participated, donated, and helped organize the event. We look forward to doing this again very soon.

SLA Employee Spotlight: September, 2020 Vanessa A. (Full Time EMT) Vanessa was born in Fremont, CA and moved to San Luis Obispo County with her family in 2008. After graduating from Templeton High School, Vanessa moved away to attend Western Oregon University where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Sign Language Interpretation in 2016. After college, Vanessa returned home to SLO County and worked for the Paso Robles School District as a Sign Language Interpreter for 3 1/...2 years. It was during that time that Vanessa began to develop a passion for the medical field and set her sights on becoming an EMT. While working full time with the school district, Vanessa attended the Cuesta College EMT Program and earned her EMT certification in 2019. Since beginning her career with SLA, Vanessa has mainly worked in the North County where she has proven to be a great addition to our team. Vanessa’s future goals are to continue her passion in medicine and become Registered Nurse specializing in Pediatrics. Her hobbies include hiking, fishing and traveling. We are very proud to have Vanessa be a part of our SLA family and helping to provide excellent EMS service to our community. See more

SLA Employee Spotlight: August, 2020 Stephen M. (Paramedic/Training Officer) Please meet the first staff member to be featured as part of our Employee Spotlight. Stephen was born and raised in San Luis Obispo and graduated from San Luis Obispo High School in 2009. Following High school, Stephen enlisted in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman where he worked active and reserve duty until 2020. Stephen then retired as a Petty officer first class. While in the Navy, Stephen gained... a passion for healthcare and obtained his EMT certification. After completing his EMT training, going reserve with the Navy, and turning 21, Stephen joined SLA. During his time here, Stephen has mainly been working in the central SLO county areas. He has taken on several additional duties such as becoming a Training officer and participating in our hiring. After working multiple years as an EMT and honing his skills, Stephen decided to become a Paramedic and attend the Cuesta College Paramedic Program (CCPP) in 2018. While balancing full time employment and reserve duty with the Navy, Stephen also managed to obtain his Bachelor’s degree in Public Health from Kaplan University. When Stephen is not working, he enjoys operating his real estate business with his wife, hiking, biking, surfing, and staying active. We would like to congratulate Lori on her 15 years of service with San Luis Ambulance. Lori has been a Registered Nurse for 34 years. She was hired with SLA in 2005 as our Critical Care Transport (CCT) Nurse Manager. Over the years, she has helped to define and elevate the standard of care that SLA provides to our most critically ill patients.
