Thirty years before becoming the first Honduran-born photojournalist to win a Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography, Marcio Sanchez, '07 Photojournalism, got his start at the Spartan Daily. I did not realize the full transformation that #SJSU made upon me until I saw the tweet from President Papazian, congratulating me, he says. I had the utmost professional direction at San José State professors who said, ‘Follow this blueprint and you’ll be successful.’ Read his transformation story go.sjsu.edu/sanchez
#FlasbackFriday: #SJSU Alumna Margaret Jenkins, ’25 Education, was a trailblazer for women athletes in the early 20th century. She was also the first Spartan and the first woman from Santa Clara County to compete in the Olympics in 1928. #Tokyo2020 In a 1984 interview with the @mercnews, she said it was considered unladylike, even a little bit brazen, to compete in athletics Reflecting on it, I guess I was a little bit courageous. I had to train in back alleys, away from everyone else. There were no woman coaches, so you had to find a male coach who would take you. http://ow.ly/OOJg50Fn1pF
#SJSU has been a part of nearly every Summer Olympic Games since 1924. Spartans have competed, coached or earned medals, while representing the United States and countries around the globe. In honor of the #Tokyo2020 games, we’ll be sharing stories all month of Spartans’ experiences at these monumental events. #ThrowbackThursday Olympics timeline http://ow.ly/v9w750Fn1ct
