Exhibition Announcement: "Hito Steyerl: Factory of the Sun" opens Friday, August 6, 2021. Learn more at sjmusart.org. Interweaving genres of video games, internet dance videos, news reportage, and documentary film, Hito Steyerl's Factory of the Sun (2015) tells the surreal story of workers whose forced moves in a motion capture studio are turned into artificial sunlight. The installation probes the pleasures and perils of digital image circulation, while exploring possibiliti...es for collective resistance when surveillance has become routine in an increasingly virtual world. We continue to explore SJMA’s permanent collection through music scenes. Today we look at the collection through #glamrock which began in the 1970s, specifically England. Bands were comprised of loud personalitiesoften cultivated to create an extra bit of drama to live performances. Songs veered from sweet quiet almost magical melodies to catchy brash anthems that inspired generations of stomping boots on the dance floor. Glam musicians didn’t represent popular culturethey ...created and united a community of kids through music and style. They drew inspiration from the Victorian era, science-fiction, and occult mysticism. Fashion consisted of over-the-top bright metallic colors, glitter, fishnets, platform shoes, jumpsuitsthe tighter the better. The scene was androgynous, with a fluidity between all glam rockers to wear the same clothing. SJMA continues to explore our permanent collection through music scenes. This #pop version was created by Holly Shen. It all started with teenagers. Pop music began in the 1950s, targeted towards youth + their newly established status as tastemakers with spending power. The genre takes its name from popular musicthat which was palatable to the larger audience. However, pop music has changed over time, as popular culture and audiences change. Pop music began with highly styli...zed musicians who often didn’t compose their own music. Their sound, clothing, + hair were generally prescribed by a music label. However, those artists often found ways to be subversivestylistically + musically. Many of them ended up writing their songs and often leaving the label of pop by the wayside. Initially pop music reflected current trends + fashion but now, pop music tends to lead styleinspiring new ways of self-expression + design. This week we are exploring SJMA’s permanent collection through music scenes. This #goth selection of SJMA’s permanent collection comes from Melanie Samay, Director of Marketing + Communications. Goth music, also known as #gothic tends to be moody + distorted with deep vocals, simultaneously hiding behind the music and guiding the songs forward. The dark sounds inspired a whole new scene and style inviting all followers to wear the same uniform: velvet, fishnet, combat boots, ...and eyelinerwith the required color palette of black, faded black, off-black, purple, + burgundy. Local artist, @vanessamarshphotography creates the most colorfully dark landscapes through a combination of photography and painting techniques. Her workthat she describes as photogramsare created from memory and developed through layers of various processes both in and out of the darkroom. When seen up close, they appear larger than life, realer than reality, and make the viewer question what exactly is a chromogenic photogram.
