Happy World Bonsai Day to all! Did you know that you can practice bonsai with just about any kind of plant? With the right care, a plant in a pot can be transformed to show the tranquil beauty of its cousins in the wild. This jade tree is in the care of San Jose Bonsai Club member, Minh. Three years ago, a friend handed him the jade in a pot, ready to give up. This little succulent is now 18 years young, living happily as bonsai in an unglazed clay pot.

This coming Saturday (May 9) is a special day for bonsai people. The world will be celebrating the World Bonsai Day. The second Saturday of May of each year was designated as the World Bonsai Day by the World Bonsai Friendship Federation 10 years ago, and the bonsai organizations world wide is celebrating the day. Because of the COVID-19, having special events are difficult. So, some organizations are using internet for this. One example is the National Bonsai Foundatio...n, which is having a special virtual celebration at https://www.bonsai-nbf.org/events/2020/5//world-bonsai-day It’s not clear if it is on May 9 or May 11.

Greetings! In light of the recent coronavirus situation, the board members of the SJBBC met on March 10 to discuss what we, as a club, want to do about our annual show (scheduled for March 28-29). After much deliberation, the board voted to cancel the annual show event. We decided this with an abundance of caution for our community in mind. Our co-presidents gathered together and decided to cancel the March 24 club meeting and to postpone the March 28 bonsai pot sale.... We hope that all may continue to be healthy and so ask everyone to follow public health recommendations to help protect yourself during this time. Please stay tuned for future announcements and information about bonsai care as we shelter-in-place for the foreseeable future.

What's this, another workshop for bonsai? We will begin this meeting with a discussion and then break out to work on our bonsai for the rest of the meeting. If you are new to the club and curious about getting started with bonsai, we welcome you to attend and ask questions of our members, who all share this hobby and in all levels of experience. Bring in your tree, and you can get meaningful feedback about how to care for it!
