SFPA Students competed yesterday in SFPA's 7th Annual Battle of the Books! After reading books from the list and presenting reports all year, students had a group Zoom competition with three grades competing in mixed-grade groups. After a tie, there was one extra question given to the remaining teams. One group quickly gave the right answer: Surviving the Applewhites! Congratulations to the winning team! Great job, everyone! #SFPA #SFPAELA #SFPAreading #sfpacontest #readingisfundamental #readingisfun

Meet our Art Teacher, Tatyana Yurkhova! She teaches Art in the elementary school and a unique History of Arts course in the middle school. I am Tatyana Yurkhova, and I teach Art and History of Art. I have been teaching at Pacific Academy for 12 years, and have seen a few generations of students graduate. I got my education in Moldova (formerly part of the Soviet Republic). My art training started at the local Junior Art Academy when I was 10 years old. I was very lucky to ha...ve a great art teacher myself: she influenced my professional life starting at that early age. I went on to get a Master’s Degree in Fine Art and Architecture. My work experience is very diverse: I have illustrated books and worked with children's magazines; created set and costume designs for theaters; and I was the Kishinev Circus’ Art Department Head for more than 8 years, doing everything from performer makeup and costume design to marketing. Before coming to the United States, I also worked as a teacher at the Junior Art Academy I graduated from. I try to bring all the riches of the art world to my students, because I am really passionate about it myself. I strongly believe that every person should be open to art and creativity. My art classes are focused on bringing out the best from my students, to develop their creative potential and to give them the right tools to express themselves. Even the Art History course I developed is focused on hands-on experience: what is a better way to understand art than to try to be an artist yourself? I love my job and feel privileged to work at such a great school. I hope you have seen my students' artwork around our school building, and that you’ll see more of it in the future! See more

Enjoy middle school students' sketchnotes! For their latest book reports, middle school students learned how to sketchnote. They conveyed all the requirements of their rubrics with a combination of pictures, symbols, and words. Then they presented this information to the class in an oral report. #SFPA #SFPAELA #SFPAsketchnotes

Meet Irina Ivanova, our Math teacher, who teaches Math, Algebra and Geometry in Grades 5 through 8! Irina Ivanova graduated from Moscow Pedagogical State University, Mathematics department, in 1986 and has been teaching various aspects of math for over 20 years. Hello! I have been working at SFPA for 3 years. I have always been fascinated by mathematics. Unlike any other discipline, math is always logical. There is no ambiguity. Math is always correct. Mathematics is also th...e language of all sciences. It seems that without mathematics none of the discoveries made over the past centuries would have been possible. So, studying and teaching mathematics seemed a logical choice and satisfied my own pursuit of the truths behind everything that we observe. As a mathematics teacher, I facilitate the same discovery of logic among my students. Each year I get great satisfaction watching my students build their own understanding of mathematical logic that allows them to pursue a wide variety of science based careers. It has been been my greatest pleasure to see my students grow. I was thrilled when our 7th graders became champions at Californian Perennial Math competition. I marvel at the SSAT results my 8th graders received this year - one student scoring 800 points out of 800, another - 781 out of 800! I admire my students who are taking Algebra II and Geometry classes right in the 9th grader. It gives me a warm feeling to think that I helped them achieve these outstanding results. Math rules! Over the past few days, the fourth and fifth graders used the scientific method to plan a special Halloween investigation all about dissolving pumpkins! The students developed their hypotheses and planned each step of the experiment. Then, they took turns telling the teacher how to conduct each step of experiment. Last, the students wrote their conclusions. Which liquid do you think dissolved our candy pumpkins the most? #SFPA #SFPAScience #SFPA4Grade #SFPA5Grade #SFPAExperiments #SFPAhandson #sfpahalloween #sfpahalloweenspirit
