IRS-Impersonation Telephone Scam An aggressive and sophisticated phone scam targeting taxpayers, including recent immigrants, has been making the rounds throughout the country. Callers claim to be employees of the IRS, but are not. These con artists can sound convincing when they call. They use fake names and bogus IRS identification badge numbers. They may know a lot about their targets, and they usually alter the caller ID to make it look like the IRS is calling. Victims ...are told they owe money to the IRS and it must be paid promptly through a pre-loaded debit card or wire transfer. If the victim refuses to cooperate, they are then threatened with arrest, deportation or suspension of a business or driver’s license. In many cases, the caller becomes hostile and insulting. Don't be fooled. The IRS will never make first contact by phone..

And a new e-mail scam: The emails appear to be from the IRS Taxpayer Advocate Service and include a bogus case number and the following message: Your reported 2013 income is flagged for review due to a document processing error. Your case has been forwarded to the Taxpayer Advocate Service for resolution assistance. To avoid delays processing your 2013 filing contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service for resolution assistance.... The recipient is directed to click on links that supposedly provide information about the "advocate" assigned to their case or that let them "review reported income." The links lead to web pages that solicit personal information. Remember: NEVER give out your personal information over the phone or reply to any of these emails if you don't feel safe to do so. Report these scams to the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration at 1-800-366-4484.

We had a call last Friday from one of regular clients saying he received a call from an agent from the IRS. She had included her badge number and a Washington DC call back number. This is a scam! and very well played. Glad she called us first.... Always remember the IRS will not contact you by E-mail or phone. But you WILL receive "love letters" from them!

We will be sending out postcards for appointments in the next couple weeks. Please be sure to call the office to confirm or change your appointment. If you do not call to confirm at least 4 days prior to your apt it will be made available to someone else. If you want to make special arraignment to mail or fax your information to the office please let us know. We look forward to seeing you again this year.... The IRS has not yet announced the date that we can start e-filing, however they have warned us preparers that refunds will be deposited about 21 days after e-filing. Prior years they were bragging that it was 7-10 days. This is due to the ID theft of last year in which the IRS was embarrassed to admit to Congress that they did not have a system to protect the legitimate taxpayer from having a refund with a stolen social security number go to the wrong person. Therefore, the legitimate taxpayer had to wait months for a refund while proving they had been defrauded. This is good and bad. Good that they are actually taking steps to safeguard your legit refund, bad that it's going to take another 2 weeks to get your legit refund.
