We were given this challenging window by homeowner in La Jolla. The challenge was not only creating the badly decayed frame, but preserving the original etched glass lights. We built the replacement with mortise and tenon joints, then milled and pieced muntins. This traditional construction makes this sash even more beautiful than the original window was when it was new.

We mortise and tenon at the same time. This is called production! Not quite like the old days but close enough. Running a 40’s Crescent tenoner with two Northfield chain mortises. Top rail is an 1-1/2 mortise, the bottom is 2-1/4. Standard stuff back in the day. This is the first time I have run both machines at once. The green northfield is a 47 direct drive motor. The 27 is a belted machine. Could have been a Yates America U-5. Both are documented with Northfield. #mortiseandtenon #throughmortise #northfieldfoundryandmachine

Hi Folks I can not say enough about the importance of your early 20th century door. when a contractor suggests discarding it for a new pre hung facsimile please... consider another path. These doors made it 100 years and probably need help from exposure or lack of maintenance. the handle sets are far superior to any modern day equivalents. See more
