This technique is called Sgraffito, (Italian: "scratched") a technique used in pottery which consists of putting down a preliminary surface (clay in this case), covering it with another (underglaze in this case), then scratching the superficial layer in such a way that the pattern that emerges is that of the lower color. This lovely plate was made by @lydiakardos who is part of #thecraftcollective here in the @artsdistrictlibertystation

Prints by Laura Uematsu. Charcoal and Pencil Portraits. Available in our boutique ... Here's more about Laura:... "I grew up in a very rigid family environment in the Midwest -- strict rules, harsh discipline, laborious chores and even seating charts for the dinner table, car rides and church. Life was strictly black & white, sharp straight lines without the slightest deviation and with ZERO freedom to be different. However, I have always been an imaginative & creative sort -- seeing colors, patterns and designs in ordinary things. Against my parents wishes, I went to Alfred University in New York to study art for five years. Then I moved to California -- the furthest west I could go. However, reality bites when bills need to be paid & life catches up to you so I settled down into "normal" jobs to make ends meet. I stuffed my artistic self away deep inside my soul - hoping for the day I could "unpack" it and let it breathe again." "I was fortunate to be able to retire in my 50's and the creative energy began to explosively emerge again -- and what blossomed was undeniable and mind-boggling. My mind flew in all directions, my hands tirelessly worked until they ached and ART burst with force from my soul. I discovered feathery shades of gray, sensual sexy curves and delicious juicy curls. I sought heavy dark pressures and light plumey sketches. I find that I am not concerned with aesthetics, boundaries or symmetry necessarily. There is nothing philosophical about my work, nothing mind-bending, soul-scorching or controversial. I am just producing what my soul releases - I hope that you enjoy my work and what flows from this now free soul of mine." Print: $199 Framed Print: $240

Some serious engineering is going on here! Balance, knot-tying, testing out wood tones. One excellent way to learn is simply trial and error. We plan projects, but also slow things down so kids can explore and experience for themselves successes and some of the failures that happen in craft. Like a nail splitting a piece of wood. If your child is in our woodworking series (which starts new each month) and seems to be taking a _really_ long time on a seemingly a simple project... just know that we see them. Every child has their own learning path and rate of exploration, and we're here to facilitate that.

Wet felt painting. This is one of our Private Pod classes. A group of 6 kiddos comes to see us for craft skills every other week. This week we did wet felting after a story to give some structure. Each one came out a little different, and every single one was a beautiful representation of the season.

They're totally, creatively customized by YOU. Come get crafty in a safe outdoor setting. This is a family friendly workshop.
