This evening our Director of Education Phillip Merlo appeared on KCRA 3 to showcase the museum’s new digital education project, SJCHOnline! Visit sjchonline.org to learn more!
The San Joaquin County Historical Museum is excited to reintroduce our exhibit Washington Street: the Heart and Soul of Stockton Chinatown to the local public! Washington Street explores the rich cultural heritage and tragic disappearance of Stockton’s Chinatown, which originally stood along Washington Street, in downtown Stockton. Through partnership with the Chinese community of Stockton, audiences explore a historic neighborhood, and learn of the consequences of American... public policy in the twentieth century through a local lens. Stockton’s historic Chinatown, Little Manila, and Japanese Quarter were all largely demolished as a result of the West End Urban Renewal Project of 1961-63 and the construction of the Crosstown Freeway. This exhibit explores what was lost, what was saved, and what is remembered. Washington Street originally debuted in 2016 as a collaborative project of the Museum and a multitude of community members from across Stockton. For SJCHOnline, the exhibit has been reformatted and updated for general audiences on the web. Furthermore, the content presented directly correlates to California Social Studies Standards associated with High School US History courses, and is written with Ethnic Studies, IB, and AVID frameworks in mind.
The San Joaquin County Historical Museum is very excited to introduce its latest educational program to the public! SJCHOnline is a digital museum of San Joaquin County, dedicated to sharing the rich histories of our community in a publicly accessible format. Exhibits are free of charge - just click "exhibits" to get started! The Museum will be using SJCHOnline to share exhibits with the public, provide social studies educators with curricular support, and engage with online historical interest communities.
