The plant of the day from the San Diego Botanic Garden can justly be called the flower that made Encinitas famous. The plant of the day is Euphorbia pulcherrima... which comes originally from Mexico. Paul Ecke started his poinsettia business in Hollywood, California in the 1920’s. At that time all poinsettias were red and tall. They were originally raised as cut flowers. Hollywood was becoming too crowded and one industry began to gobble up all available land- the movie business. Paul Ecke Sr. moved his family and his business to Encinitas. He began his venture in Encinitas with 40 acres he bought for $150.00 an acre. The Ecke family began hybridizing poinsettias and changed them into a potted plant for indoors during the holidays. Their efforts forever changed the way we view poinsettias. See more
