The scientific name for the desert tortoise is Gopherus agassizii. The name comes from the French word 'gaufre' which means small burrowing animal. This refers ...to the tortoises burrowing habits which creates a subterranean environment that other species also use to keep cool in Death Valley's extreme environment.
