San Anselmo's open spaces are still available for your de-stressing and relaxation. You can't drive to them, but most San Anselmo residents can walk or bike to any of several lovely open space preserves and get away from the madness. All are dog- and kid-friendly. Practice social distancing and wear a mask when you encounter other hikers. No bikes on the trails, please. The Red Hill Trail starts behind Westamerica Bank in the Red Hill Shopping Center and takes you up an e...asy climb to some beautiful views. The Memorial Ridge Trail connects Sorich Ranch Park to the American Legion Log Cabin in Memorial Park. Great wildflowers now. The Dean Nyberg Trail starts in the redwood grove in Sorich Ranch Park and climbs to a beautiful rock formation that's great for clambering. Faude Park has several hiking trails with beautiful views of our fair town. Enter from Alderney, Tomahawk, or Wood Court. Get outside for some fresh air, exercise, and get back in touch with nature. The Red Hill Trail is complete. Come this Saturday, April 28, at 10 AM to attend the official grand opening and ribbon cutting. The short ceremony will be followed by a guided hike to the summit and a bring-your-own picnic. Join us to celebrate this newest addition to San Anselmo.

After five years of effort, your Open Space Committee, working with Public Works, the Historical Commission and volunteers, have completed construction of the Red Hill Trail. The trail is 3/4 of a mile long and gains 400' of elevation, providing unmatched views of the town, Ross Valley, and San Rafael. The out-and-back trail can be walked in an hour, making for a great lunchtime picnic. Interpretive signs show historical photos taken from that spot. No bikes, horses, camping, smoking or fires. The trailhead is on Shaw Drive between Red Hill Shopping Center and Walgreens. Grab a takeout lunch from the Edo Grill and head on up.

The Open Space Committee is holding regular work parties to build the new Red Hill Trail. We meet every Saturday morning from 9 to 12 at the trailhead behind the Edo Grill. Wear gloves, boots, and a hat and bring water. Tools are provided. No experience necessary and the work isn't very strenuous. Get some exercise and fresh air, meet some other nice folks, and help build a landmark trail and become a part of local history.

Your San Anselmo Open Space Committee and DPW will soon begin construction of the Red Hill Trail. Most of the work will be done by volunteers - clearing brush, removing litter, improving the trail, and installing steps, signs, and safety features. If you'd like to sign up to help, contact project leader Brian Crawford at [email protected].
