Today in history, Alice Walker won the Pulitzer Prize for Best Fiction for her seminal novel, The Color Purple. Published in 1982, the Color Purple put Alice Wa...lker firmly in the literary pantheon of great American writers. The novel focuses on the experience of Black women in the rural South in the 1930s and explores their low social status as the most marginalized in the society. In 1985, the novel was adapted into an acclaimed movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah. The BBC serialized the novel into a radio drama in 2008, dividing the novel into ten 15-minute episodes. Most recently, in 2015, the m/usical was revived on Broadway starring Jennifer Hudson. See more
