Today we lost an icon and friend in the music industry: Henry Goldrich. For many decades, Manny’s Music was THE place to get music gear and he was THE guy to see, even before Sam Ash Music hit the scene. If you were a musician strolling into NYC, you couldn’t help but stop in and buy something, even if it was a pair of drumsticks or guitar strings. A truly captivating and friendly person, Henry managed to make friends with almost anyone who would stop in, including some that ...were already or soon to be famous. Chances are if you think of any musicians between the 60s and 90s who visited NYC, they visited Manny’s and more than likely became friends with Henry. The stories he had could fill a book that would make Atlas Shrugged look like light reading. Ol’ Yellow was a Henry Goldrich staple to Manny’s which was a yellow-painted Danelectro test guitar for trying out guitar amps and pedals. Even George Harrison of The Beatles wanted to buy it but was turned down! He also worked with Guns N’ Roses to have the store prominently shown in their music video for Paradise City. Nearly famous person who stopped by was proud to sign a headshot to be placed on their Wall Of Fame which surrounded the store, a few of which we have for you to see. Most importantly, he was a friend and inspiration to the Ash family. When we set up shop on 48th Street alongside Manny’s and others on Music Row, there was never any animosity between our families. Even Henry and his wife Judi had a close bond with Jerry and Bernice throughout the years and always cared for one another and traveled the world together. When the Ash family acquired Manny’s, we made a promise to keep the authenticity of the Manny’s creation including a location on the West Coast so they would finally know what New Yorkers got to experience for years. We’re very proud to say that Ian Goldrich, Henry’s son, is still an important part of the Sam Ash Music family overseeing one of our most important regions. We’ll miss Henry dearly and his legacy will live on forever. Thank you for being a friend in business and life and for enriching musicians with the gift of music. RIP Henry Goldrich
