A great barista is like a chef and a sommelier at the same time. Our baristas have just finished our new Barista Level One Exam and all of our incredible team members passed all sections of theory, practical and service. They’ve earned their new pins marking their achievement and eligibility for origin travel and the upcoming Advanced Barista and Master Barista Exams. Level One is mandatory for every barista and must be taken until passed but the next levels are voluntary an...d increase in their demand and difficulty much like the Court of Master Sommeliers in wine. We’ll be sharing more with an inside look of how intensive and ranging these exams are here at Saint Frank but for now congratulate your barista next time you see them and look forward to an even more impressive team of professionals in knowledge, skill and service!

It’s been over a year since I’ve been to this place but makes 10 years with these amazing people and coffees. Traveling and connecting to producers has never been more challenging but I feel more alive than ever ready to give myself away in the best ways. This place and people fills my sails with powerful life giving winds. There are remnants of landslides and lingering stress and anxiety amidst the hope of a new harvest and a new year. Our producer partners in Honduras have been devastated by hurricanes as many have lost their homes and land. This is a true disaster and our friends are in great need during a year that has already been challenged by COVID19. We are raising money to relocate families with @Benjampaz and Beneficio San Vicente alongside Honduras non profit @servhonduras for the rebuilding of lost homes. Today marks seven years since this photo was taken opening day on Russian Hill in San Francisco. We’ve experienced and grown so much over these seven years here in the Bay Area and throughout the world but it’s this place that grounds everything for us, serving our community to reveal the extraordinary in everyday gestures. We can’t think of any better medium for opening a meaningfully connected world than specialty coffee. Thank you so much for your friendship and support... of our dreams and our amazing team. The bond of our community and the resilience of our team throughout this challenging year is so encouraging and inspiring. Next week we will be taking a short rest with our team reflecting on the last 7 years and looking forward to the next seven. Details will be posted in stories and in our shops. Today we kneel in solidarity with our black brothers and sisters protesting the violence and systemic oppression that continues to divide and destroy through manipulations of power and privilege. At today’s protest in front of SF City Hall the Reverend Dr. Amos Brown gave a powerful reminder that "no man is an island unto himself and that we are all humankind. At Saint Frank we have a saying drawn from the life of Saint Francis to guide our vision and action in coffee toward... the humanization and empowerment of coffee producers who are marginalized people of color: "Everything Matters. Everything is Connected" Francis showed us to take a relational approach to every life we encounter assuming our connection and submitting to the other in love and humility. At the threshold of our original cafe on Polk Street we hang an image and statement of that inspiration (see our stories). We rarely know how to stand (or kneel) in solidarity with those who suffer but we know that we can only begin to see the chains of systemic oppression fall away when we choose to confront our own blindness and complicit shadow. Only in this light we can move forward with clarity to enact sustainable change. This is work of the heart AND work of law. We are searching for a freedom and a future where the reality that everything matters and everything is connected can be experienced in its fullness. All Lives DON’T Matter Unless Black Lives Matter. But they do, and we can’t know true joy and freedom until we embrace every life that matters and that everything is connected. Until then it is quite true that with no justice there is no real peace.
