While it is plausible, if not expected, that downtowns big and small will be imprinted with the marks of this shared tragedy once it is over, the lessons of history and human nature instruct that the pull of urban centers will remain.

The need for flex work space is a trend that was accelerated by the pandemic. We have plans to incorporate lots of comfortable spaces with really good Internet - both indoors and out - for residents to WFH at our next projects. We can't wait to share design drawings of them with you soon.

We are proud to work alongside so many people who buoy us with their talent and heart. We’re all craving community and inspiration right now, and so over the weekend, our team at 17th Place Townhomes teamed up with Purveyor to plan a really special (socially distanced) community event. We worked with Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra to host a concert with two talented local violinists. As musicians played throughout the property, windows flung open and residents popped out to s...it on their stoops. Jeran McConnel provided treat bags with ingredients for after-dinner drinks, handkerchiefs and home baked shortbread cookies. We tucked handwritten notes in each bundle to let residents know that we’re all in this together. Talented local artist, Jennifer Williams Cordova, provided chalk art in the courtyard. And we even had signs made for each townhome resident to hang in their window. In planning this event, we felt it was important to highlight and support local creatives. These uncertain times have been especially difficult for creative professionals. There are also many healthcare workers who call 17th Place home. Here’s our message to you: we see you working long hours, exposing yourself to risk to protect others. We hope you know that we are thankful for you. We’re here for you. You’re the true heros in all of this.

We couldn’t love this any more! The economic value and benefits of walking cannot be overstated. Walking is powerful. Cities like ours should promote urbanism and walkability in our urban core. We’re doing our part.

I am humbled and honored to be included along with pivotal Central Valley leaders like Irma L. Olguin Jr and John P. Lake in an article about our dear Bakersfie...ld for the latest issue of Inc. Magazine. This is excellent validation of what many of us see and feel here everyday Bakersfield is quietly rising through the ranks to become a top spot for entrepreneurial growth, job and business creation. But still, it’s a major thrill to see in print our city comfortably included in Inc’s top 50 surge cities for startups.

We appreciate this well reasoned voice in support of walkability and bikeability in our city. As Sage continues our work to make Bakersfield more accessible for pedestrians and bicyclists, it’s encouraging to open the Monday paper and read this If we ever hope to reduce our dependence on cars, we should systematically reduce the impediments to walking and biking. Not only for the reduction of pollution, but to improve our health.... Every street that is wide enough to accommodate a bike lane should be painted with one. Sidewalks in neighborhoods should be a high priority. Places where sidewalks suddenly disappear and then reappear should be connected.

The cat’s out of the bag! The first location for Bitwise’s Bakersfield expansion is right in the heart of downtown, across from the iconic and successfully reimagined Padre Hotel. Sage was thrilled for the opportunity to represent the owners as they acquired two historic structures filled with potential on 18th Street - the Vincent’s building at 1723 and the Turk’s Building at 1701. But this is so much bigger than buildings. This project is crucial to the future of Bakersfi...eld and could ultimately prove to the rest of the country that truly innovative ideas can thrive in the Central Valley. Bitwise has created a tech ecosystem by offering a unique program of software training, building world-class tech venues, leasing state-of-the-art spaces and creating software companies focused on solving some of the world’s biggest challenges. Bitwise discovered that what we typically think of as the biggest obstacles to economic development for cities in the Central Valley (an overlooked location with low education levels and underutilized downtown properties) could become some of our greatest strengths. The issues we face as a community are sobering but not insurmountable. The kind of creative thinking that Bitwise brings is a giant step in the right direction. The more our community seeks to be pioneers of the digital age, the stronger Bakersfield will be now and for the generations that come after us. The success of Bitwise’s model ultimately proves that large metros need not be the exclusive hubs of technology and innovation. Intensely aligned with this company’s mission and vision, we have worked alongside the Bitwise team from the expansion project’s inception. We’ve connected them with the local investment community, local city leaders and officials, the education community, non-profits, local consultants and creative professionals, helped identify and secure the right buildings and provided information about the local culture. We feel immense pride as we see Bitwise take this momentous step by investing so permanently and passionately in the future of Bakersfield. Welcome to Bakersfield, Bitwise. This community is glad to have you. https://www.bakersfield.com//article_c6c08ede-0579-11ea-9c (Images by Creatiful.Co)
