A book review of "White Devil's Daughters: The Women Who Fought Slavery in San Francisco's Chinatown." Might want to add this one to your reading list. "Telling... their stories is what Julia Flynn Siler [the author] does, recounting the bravery of the women who dared escape their imprisonment and the devotion of the women who ensured their safety. The lens is on the early years of Chinese immigration to San Francisco during the late 19th century, when thousands of Chinese women were sold and brought in as domestic slaves and prostitutes to work in the brothels and homes of the city’s Chinatown district. Siler draws upon a vast array of sources, from letters to fascinating photographs of the time, to paint the city’s lawless early years, when smugglers operated largely with impunity." See more

The national screening of "Tyrus," about Angel Island immigrant Tyrus Wong, will air September 8 on PBS (check your local listings). Here is a clip where he vis...ited the island, about five years ago. Tyrus created the painterly look of the movie "Bambi" and came through the island in 1920 when he was ten. He lived and created until he passed away last year at the age of 106! He also worked for Warner Bros., created many other forms of art including ceramics and greeting cards, and into his 100s was building and flying incredible kites. Pamela Tom's film is one to record and watch! Please share this post with your friends so they can enjoy it as well. See more
