Today we're showcasing one of the asset collections we created for Spider-Man: Miles Morales released in November. These masks were created for some of the villains you encounter in game. One challenging aspect of creating these is making sure they fit with the character models, and modeling all the organic shapes so they are clean and free of any smoothing imperfections. When it came to texturing, nailing the metallic / high tech look was important, we decided to add subt...le imperfections in the micro-surface in order for them to look real and plausible and not brand new. It's a careful balance when texturing full metal objects as it can quite easily look un-textured. We were happy with the final result in the game. You encounter enemies in game throughout the game with these masks on. Swipe to see in game screenshots, all of which can be found online. First Person Friday / AKM First Person Today we're showcasing these first person renders of the AKM we previously posted, it was created for an unannounced project in 2018. For this one, we really wanted the wood stock to pop right in first person view. We added lots of damage right in camera view to the dust cover, mostly in the height channel. The mix of soft wear, and small chips were delicately placed so as to not read too heavy handed. However reflecting on the asset no...w, given this is over two years old, we feel it probably still is a bit too much. If we were to do it again, I think we'd focus on the material definition between the dust cover and receiver more. A common challenge in first person view is how and when to emphasize texturing and model details, this is what makes creating view models so unique, in that your work is mostly seen at a fixed position and at an extreme camera angle, part of the reason why we love it so much as its its own unique challenge. Texture Tuesday / Vityaz Re-render We've learned so much as we've showcased weapons over the past few months, so we wanted to go back and remake some of the original presentations in a cleaner scene, as well as polish the texturing a bit more to highlight the work. In this case, we wanted to spotlight the PP-19 Vityaz textures, and apply what we've learned to it. Some brief history on the weapon, Vityaz iis Russian for knight, it’s a 919mm Parabellum submachine gun and it’s... the standard submachine gun for all branches of the Russian military and police forces. Seen here on a simple clean white background, we decided to clean up quite a bit on this gun as before it was bit overdone. The textures felt over communicated and noisy. You can see where we pulled back a lot on the main metal materials to more accurately represent the real thing, but we kept some bare metals in for accent and interest, even though it's not super realistic to have bare metals on such a gun. We did still keep a few areas worn out. The stock for example, we kept quite worn out, as we love the treatment Alex did on that area. We're constantly iterating to try to improve all areas of our expertise, this is just one example of how texturing can really change the look of an asset we make. #FlashbackFriday / Humvee While we are mostly known for our weapon work, we also do quite a bit of vehicle and prop work. Since we have not shown many yet due to NDA reasons on various projects, we wanted to share a small sneak peak of a vehicle we did a few years ago. This is an older #asset, but we felt it still holds up decently, this asset is a fully detailed in game Humvee vehicle. It was very challenging keeping it within technical specifications given all the detail... needed for such a big #vehicle. This asset features a full #firstperson interior cockpit (less detail was given to certain areas), and an armored gunner position with .50 cal gun. For the modeling, we tried to be as accurate as we could but also game ready. For the texturing, we didn't want to have too many unique shapes in the textures since when you see a few next to each other they would all look the same. Vehicles can be different in that way, in that you have to think about such things as variety, and reusability in #game. This is just a small example of the wide variety of the hard surface work we do, our love and passion is with all things #hardsurface art. We love sharing these weekly updates with everyone, and are always happy to hear that people enjoy seeing them! https://ryzinart.com/

M417 Weapon Asset This #weapon is part of the continued series we've been showcasing of weapons created in 2018 for an unannounced project. The M417 is the larger caliber version of the HK416, it is a gas-operated, selective fire #rifle with a rotating bolt. Creating weapons that are quite minimal, such as this, can be difficult in that you have vast areas of no #detail. We make up for this with trying to do #texture based shape development in areas of broad empty surface. ...The trick with this is balancing it so there are a mix of eye rest areas as well as shape detail. Exaggerated minimalism is the key but with an extra push of character so as it not be boring. As always it's our pleasure showing the work off, we have more to come this year.
