Spatz DeAngelo & his entire family! Former owner of the Ryde Hotel 1972-1979. Spats enjoyed our Sunday October picnic and gave us more true history of the ryde hotel. We do not know if you remember spats but he used to walk the hotel dressed like Al Capone with a fedora spatz and the Tommy Gun. All of the waiters were dressed as gangsters with gun holsters and the female servers wore flapper dresses. His five children performed burlesque every Friday and Saturday night on sta...ge in the speakeasy. Spats renovated the lower Speakeasy and told us that behind the mirrors of the bar downstairs there are original Art Deco hand painted murals. He also showed us where the FBI sealed the entrance to the tunnels that ran beneath the hotel during prohibition. Our staff is looking forward to finding a sledgehammer and breaking through the seal to discover thetunnels between the river and the water tower. Additionally he cleared up a falsehood that has been rumored for many decades. Lon Chaney Jr never owned the ryde hotel. His brother George Chaney and his wife bought the hotel in the mid-30s. The original 1927 Speakeasy originally consisted of 2sliding barn doors on the backside of the hotel. Cars would literally drive into the bottom of the hotel. Liquor sold off of shelves from a side room that still currently exist with bars on the window to this day. The original speakeasy liquor area is still exactly as it was left in the early30s. Spats also told us the story of our back main office which used to be a barber shop. A man was getting a shave and haircut when a jealous husband stormed through the hotel with a shotgun and shot him in thebarber chair for cheating with his wife. Spatz still has the barber chair. We are really looking forward to all of the original pictures and Publications and newspaper articles that he and his family has saved in scrapbooks and we will be posting all of it as it is sent to us.
