OCTOBER 7, FEAST OF OUR LADY OF THE HOLY ROSARY The Battle of Lepanto No discussion of the history of the Rosary would be complete without a description of th...e epic and historic Battle of Lepanto. While engaged in a protracted war with the Muslim Turks over the control of Eastern Europe and in particular the Mediterranean, Pope Pius V organized a fleet of ships to engage the Muslim Turkish navy. Pope Pius V implored all the faithful to fervently pray the Rosary and ask our Blessed Mother to intercede on behalf of the Christians. Despite being hopelessly outnumbered in quantity of ships and fighting men, the Muslim Turks were defeated at the Battle of Lepanto on October 7, 1571. Pope Pius V declared this day to be the Feast of the Holy Rosary and asked all to give thanks to Our Lady of Victory for her timely intercession in answer to the faithful’s praying of the Rosary. This feast remains important in our church to this day, testifying to the Rosary’s significance in our Church’s history. HAPPY FEAST DAY EVERYONE!

Venerable Mother Ignacia del Espiritu Santo: A Missionary As we enter into the month of October, the first thought that presents itself, is the devotion to Our... Lady of the Holy Rosary and its being a mission month. With Christ as Lord of Missions and Mary as the Queen of Missions, the month of October becomes doubly significant. The Mother_son merger makes the great difference. With mission and missionaries emerging to the fore, the Religious of the Virgin Mary and the followers of Holy Mother Ignacia spontaneously comes up with its very own Mother Ignacia, who is a missionary herself. Yes. This great woman who has remained simple and humble, is a product of the 17th century. Yet her spirit continues to live in this generation-an age of mission. His Holiness, St. John Paul II, spoke of Holy Mother Ignacia in glowing terms when he addressed about 50 RVM's led by the late Reverend Mother Maria Josefina C. Yamzon, RVM of a happy memory, at the Vatican City. That event was the celebration of the 300th anniversary of the existence of the Congregation of the Religious of the Virgin Mary. Excerpts of his talks are quoted below: "In the past 300 years, the Church in the Philippines has benefited from the apostolate of education and works of charity that stem from the great love of souls which Mother Ignacia bequeathed to you as a precious heritage. May your lives be filled with overflowing joy of serving Christ in the spiritually and materially needy brothers and sisters so that your example maybe a shining light for men and women of our times and so that more young people may be encouraged to share your great love for souls." Indeed Venerable Mother Ignacia is truly a missionary. For no one can posses a great love for souls unless this person has also a great love for God. And no one with great love for God can fail to follow His commission to every baptized person "to proclaim the Good News." Thus we become the extensions of His mission from the Father. And this means "to love without frontiers, to communicate and extend the Kingdom and open new ways to the Gospel." This is being missionary. This is the missionary in Holy Mother Ignacia. Our Lady of the Holy Rosary and Venerable Mother Ignacia, Ora pro nobis.
