New Weekly Workout! 20 min Mini Ball The mini ball really changed the way I work my abdominals and powerhouse. Before using it, I hit a wall where I felt li...ke my abs just weren’t getting stronger and it was hindering the rest of my movement. Working with this prop helped me to finally get out of my neck and really work my powerhouse because I strengthened my abs from a lengthened phase allowing me to find the connection and work both eccentrically and concentrically. I felt this class for 3 days after . These exercises get progressively more challenging, follow one after the other as each one build to the next. I stopped going when my job closed it’s doors and we were all shut down. Yesterday, for the first time in more than a year, I went back. The same friendly man was there! He recognized me right away and said You look really good. I said thank you and he said no you look really good what are you doing? And I realized how much had changed and the positive impact it had on me. I look better, but I also feel so much better inside. I’m doing what I love everyday and I’m surrounded by so much love too. Transformation Tuesday & Storytime So much has changed between these two photos: I’ve gotten stronger, improved my posture, lost weight. But more importantlyI have found a workout routine that keeps me consistent, motivated, happy and confident. I wouldn’t trade those for anything! I always I knew I needed to workout but between long rehearsals, auditions and work the idea of doing typical gym workouts just didn’t appeal to me. I tried everything: Spin classes, running..., HIIT, yoga, weights, treadmill, stair climber etc. I would always fall into the same patterntrain obsessively for a few weeks then completely drop off. I never found something I could stick with. It wasn’t until I found Pilates that I was able to LOVE working out. It fit into my life and always made me feel better. It had a profound effect on me that I just didn’t find with any other workout regimeit powerfully changed my mind so that I could stay consistent. Pilates alone made me feel great but wasn’t giving me all of the results I wanted. Over the last couple of years I have been able develop my own workout routines using my background in classical Pilates, dance, and anatomy and physiology that is a ONE STOP shop. Now I don’t do anything else. My Pilates workouts include resistance training, body weight training, weight lifting, cardio/calisthenics, therapeutic stretching and recovery. I’ve narrowed down the best approach to these systems so that you don’t have to. All you have to do is show up and press play. Ruth Pilates has a growing library of on demand workouts. CONTROL BALANCE: I love how straight forward Pilates was when he named his exercises. (I mean roll like a ball pretty genius. It’s a cue and an exercise all in one). This is one of the most advanced mat moves which means it rarely makes its way into my classesbut Control Balance is special to me. My dance teachers growing up often had us warm up with moves like this. I only knew it as Martha Graham technique. Of course I found out later that Joe and Martha were seriously intertwined! Shoulder balances like this made their way into my choreography in college and after. My connection to Pilates goes WAY BACK! I want to know: What’s an exercise you ALWAYS struggle with? Who doesn’t love the Leg Pull Down? (P.s. it’s even more fun on the reformer) I feel SO strong when I do this exercise. It usually makes its way into my virtual class at least once a week. The ABS: we know how important they are, but they can be challenging to engage properly. It took me a long to time figure out how to truly activate my abs when working out. My lower back would end up taking over. In Pilates, we consider the entire torso to be the core or the Powerhouse. That includes the shoulders, lats, abdominals, lower back, obliques, inner thighs and glutes! We want to learn how all of the muscles can work together to create the most efficient movement o...f the body. Problems can occur when one side of the body is a lot stronger than the other. My lower back was way stronger than my abs for a long time so my brain would just go okay, the abs can’t do this, give the task to the back. You want strong lower back muscles but balance is best. Tendon Stretch Story time! The first time I practiced this move with my teacher, she stood right behind me so that I couldn’t move my hips back as I pressed the carriage out. I was so fearful that I would fall over and guess whatI DID! I flipped over into a somersault and fell off the reformer. The my teacher goes GREAT JOB! I was confused for a moment but realized that sometimes you have to take a risk and commit to something to figure it out. My dance teachers ...would also be proud of us if we fell (safely of course) because it showed we really went for it. So the lesson to take from this? Go for it!!!
