How many of you still keep these souvenirs? Moths won’t go extinct as long as there are people like us around, but at least we know the bugs will need to evolve before they can eat brass buttons. Talking about their fathers , Scott Rubel & Helen Driscoll dragged some old military jackets out of the closets. 1: Two jackets and parade trousers from Helen’s father, Lt.Col. Thomas D. Driscoll, who was a career cavalry man, starting out when the cavalry still depended on horses. 2...: An officer jacket from Scott’s grandfather, Henry Scott Rubel, who was the radio man on the U.S.S. Shawmut and oversaw the communications for the surrender of German vessels in the North seas after Armistice in 1918, and the following year was radio operator for the historic first trans-Atlantic flight of the Navy’s Curtiss NC-4. 3: A field jacket belonging to Scott’s father, who served Air Force in the Korean conflict 1952-1956. #veteransday #veterans #cavalry #koreanwar #koreanveteran #militarydress #artillery #navy #airforce #shawmut #radio #oglala

Scott Rubel Standing Guard at Castle Gate Crashing events at Rubel Castle was a sport in the 70s. King Michael, when hosting an event, had to worry about this, and he would station his trusted hands in front to fend them off. This is Scott Rubel, dressed for a party, but standing alone out front with his 1876 Canadian Mountie Winchester rifle. Try to crash our party, will ya? Circa 1974. This is a photograph of a photograph just found.

This online presentation clears up an old story about a "Frank Lloyd Wright" house built for silent film star, fan dancer, and Glendora resident Sally Rand. Was it made by Wright? Well, the roof leaked, which is a clue as to the pedigree of the structure, and proves that Castle-Builder Michael was Wright's equal as a designer-builder.

Introducing the first online publication of a presentation from the Glendora Historical Society 40 minutes This online presentation clears up an old story about... a "Frank Lloyd Wright" house built for silent film star, fan dancer, and Glendora resident Sally Rand. Was it made by Wright? Well, the roof leaked, which is a clue as to the pedigree of the structure, and proves that Castle-Builder Michael was Wright's equal as a designer-builder. The idea of a home designed and built for Sally Rand by Frank Lloyd Wright persists as a legend in Glendora. Professor Steve Slakey of the Glendora Historical Society presents his research and sets this architectural story straight. This is the first online version of the Society's series of presentations, traditionally held at the Bidwell Forum of the Glendora Public Library.

.. A portrait of Henry Scott Rubel, father of Castle-Builder Michael. Heinz studied to be an electrical engineer and in 1917, when this likeness was taken, he entered the U.S. Navy and served as radio man aboard the minelayer U.S.S. Shawmut. He held the fastest Morse code speed record in the Navy for three years running, and was the central operator broadcasting the orders for conditions of the surrender of German vessels after Armistice. Aboard ship is where his career in radio and entertainment began, as he wrote songs and performed them for the troops. One of his songs, "Force of Mine," was made the official song of the North Sea Mine Barrage by Admiral Joseph Straus.

It has been rumored and written that Frank Lloyd Wright designed ...a home in Glendora for Sally Rand. While it is true that a house with a Wright pedigree once existed near the intersection of Sierra Madre Avenue and Glendora Mountain Road, the story is more involved and interesting than that. The Wright house was designed by a Wright disciple, constructed in Ontario, shipped in pieces, and, with a detour, finally assembled in Glendora. Please join the Glendora Historical Society meeting on Monday, September 28, at 6:30pm for the first online presentation by Steve Slakey in the public meeting. There are two ways to join: Click on this link https://zoom.us/j/94901892526 OR Go the www.glendoralibrary.org, scroll down to events, click on the listing for the GHS meeting, and then click on the Zoom link.
