Pacific Islander Marines Major Kurt Chew-een Lee (1926-2014) was the FIRST Asian American Marine Corps Officer and a child of Chinese immigrants. He has been awarded the Navy Cross and Silver Star and two Purple Hearts for his service. His most famous act of bravery occurred in November 1950 during the Korean war when he conducted a solo mission in heavy snow to drive back Chinese soldiers. Lee called out Mandarin commands during the mission, successfully confusing the enemy and driving them back. TODAY IN HISTORY: 1942 On May 5th, 1942, 29 men that would become the miracle we call the "Navajo Code Talkers", arrived at Recruit Depot San Diego for basic training in the Marine Corps. The idea for the program was developed by a WWI veteran and the son of a missionary on the Navajo Reservation, Philip Johnston, who proposed that a group of Navajo recruits would utilize their native language to leverage effective and tactical communication during the war. The Navajo Cod...e Talkers were able to enable Marines on the ground to safely transmit orders over radio over telephone lines, which undoubtedly saved lives during the battle of Iwo Jima. Out of the estimated 400 Navajo who served as code talkers, the original 29 were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, and the remaining was awarded the Silver Medal on July 26, 2001.
