I love the wisdom Dr. Gottfried shares here. It is easier to take a reductionist approach to health and weight loss, but the truth is there are multiple factors at play, that are completely unique for each person. We must take all of these into consideration to properly support, and achieve sustained results. How many have heard doctors tell them to eat less and exercise more But how can this be true when 98% of diets fail? This equation is too simple and fails to consider... stress, sleep, hormones, behaviors, microbiota, gene/environment interactions, and, most important, the brain/body interface. Some experts continue to blame overnutrition (i.e., overeating). Other experts blame our microbiota-harming lifestyle. We eat a Western diet and what food author @michael.pollan calls food-like substances: processed and adulterated food. As a result, we’ve lost bacterial diversity, disrupted gut integrity (leaky gut), and grown too many pathogens that promote the release of inflammatory messengers called cytokines. Others claim the problem is that we end up with too many of the microbes that extract excess energy from food and cause inflammation, leading to leaky gut, metabolic disorders, more inflammation, and weight gain. Some researchers blame gut microbiota and the microbiome talking to the neuroendocrine system, especially the HPA (hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal) axis (the main stress regulation system). All you might notice is that you feel revved up and want pizza for dinner. Some experts villainize carbs and tell us to eat more bacon and steak. Neurobiologist and #obesityresearcher Stephan Guyenet notes that the human brain is hardwired to look for certain properties in food, and it has a way . . . of sweeping aside your natural limits on intake. So hyper-palatable foods with lots of sugar and fat to boost tastiness attract the brain compared to things like kale, which doesn't light the brain's reward centers in the same way. Who’s right? Is the correct answer all of the above? My belief is that the root of the obesity epidemic is in all of these problems, a combination of complex and subtle interactions of the brain and body

I’m just gonna leave this here #mood Yoga is a great form of mindfulness-based exercise with some promising benefits for our body, and minds. Mindfulness meditation associated with yoga practice can reduce stress, anxiety, burnout and enhance resilience (yes please)... Yoga practices also shown to directly stimulate that beautiful vagus nerve (mmm yes, gut-brain axis), enhancing parasympathetic output - which supports mood, energy states, as well as enhancing neuroendocrine, metabolic, cognitive, and immune responses. Now don’t disrupt my shavasana. B6 (Pyridoxine) or PLP (pyridoxal 5’-phosphate), the metabolically active form of B6. This water soluble B vitamin is vital for various functions throughout the body. B6 deficiency can lead to changes in mood - irritability, anxiety, depression, muscle pains, worsening symptoms of anemia, low energy, PMS symptoms, migraines, low energy and/or mouth sores. How does B6 become deficient? First of all - are we getting enough of the foods high...er in B6 (grass fed beef, turkey breast, pistachios, tuna, pinto beans, avocado, etc.) Are we properly digesting and absorbing these foods? Other causes that can deplete B6 include birth control use, stress, candida overgrowth, etc. B6 can thus support mood due to its role with several important neurotransmitters, can reduce symptoms associated with PMS, can support skin health, improve sleep (function of neurotransmitter balance) with improved dream recall, etc. Proper evaluation can help determine your need for B6. #rootedfxnutrition #rooted #functionalnutrition #integrativenutrition #nutrition #ranchocucamonga #ranchonutritionist #b6 #plp #vitaminb6 See more

When it comes to gut imbalances, Candida overgrowth has become incredibly common. Candidiasis is the overgrowth of the yeast Candida albicans, which is a normal inhabitant in the GI tract. This yeast can become an opportunistic pathogen when ones health becomes compromised. Symptoms of candida overgrowth vary person to person but commonly we see: mental fog, muscle/joint pain and/or weakness, general fatigue, hormone imbalance, immune dysfunction/autoimmuni...ty, and skin irritations. Addressing underlying causes for the dysbiosis in the first place, and recognizing contributing factors for each person is necessary to support the system and reduce overall body burden. If not addressed, recurrence is very common. Lastly, we often find candida overgrowth tagging along with over gut infections or imbalances like SIBO, SIFO, gut permeability, etc. Thus, each approach is unique for each individual, and each person’s experience is unique. #rootedfxnutrition #rooted #functionalnutrition #integrativenutrition #nutrition #leakygut #gutpermeability #galtmalt #gutinflammation #gutbrainaxis #microbiome #dysbiosis #autoimmine #ibs #ibd #gut #candida #candidaovergrowth #gutimbalances #dysbiosis See more

Endometriosis affects 10-15% of women of childbearing age. Endometriosis is the presence of endometrial tissue outside of the uterus. Symptoms may include painful periods, persistent low back and pelvic pain, discomfort during bowel movements or urination, menses lasting longer than 7 days, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, nausea during menstruation, pain during or after intercourse, and can also be a common cause of infertility or endometrial cysts. This diagram is amazing ...in how it breaks down some of the major influences impacting the expression of endometriosis. Endometriosis is an inflammatory condition. These women also tend to have an altered immune response, that can be correlated back to an imbalanced hormonal response. Research also notes how the gut microbiome plays a role as a driving factor of the inflammatory response, and dysregulated immune system. LPS endotoxins are gram negative bacteria that behave as inflammatory mediators, and can create systemic inflammation in the presence of gut permeability. Addressing gut imbalances would be necessary to support women who experience endometriosis. Considering each women’s unique bio-individuality such as genetic and epigenetic influences from diet, lifestyle, stress, environmental exposures (even from in utero- big one for these hormonal imbalances), etc. Proper dietary intervention to address these unique differences, while supporting body systems to bring back balance and reduce body burden will help reduce symptoms and improve quality of life for women with endometriosis. #rootedfxnutrition #rooted #functionalnutrition #integrativenutrition #nutrition #inflammation #lipopolysaccarhides #lps #immunedysregulation #endotoxins #endometriosis #womenshealth #pelvicpain #healthegut #leakygut #gutpermeability #galtmalt #gutinflammation #gutbrainaxis #microbiome #dysbiosis #autoimmine #ibs #ibd #gut #ranchocucamonga #ranchonutritionist

Great information provided from Great Plains Laboratory. If you, or someone you know may be experiencing some of these symptoms I highly recommend the MycoTOX test with Great Plains. At Rooted we love the testing provided by Great Plains, and have access to any test offered. @great_plains_laboratory Mycotoxins from mold are some of the most common and toxic compounds we are exposed to, and they can be incredibly harmful to our mental and physical heath. Mycotoxicosis is... the term used for poisoning associated with exposure to mycotoxins. One of the main organs affected by mycotoxins is the brain. The blood brain barrier, which is a selective permeable barrier protecting the brain, can be damaged by mycotoxins. Inhibition of protein synthesis, damage to DNA, and increased production of inflammatory cytokines lead to damage of the central nervous system. Mycotoxins also affect the proliferation and migration of neurons. The neurotoxicity caused by mycotoxins can lead to a variety of neurological and neuropsychiatric problems including: DepressionPoor Memory Anxiety Cognitive Impairment Dementia Sleep Disorders DepersonalizationDerealization The symptoms of mycotoxicosis depend on the type of mycotoxin, the concentration and length of exposure, and the age, genetics, sex, and overall heath of the exposed individual. #greatplainslaboratory #integrativemedicine #environmentaltoxins #mycotoxins #moldexposure #mentalhealth #nutrition #wellness #biotoxinillness #alternativemedicine #brainhealth #rootcause #chronicillness #functionalmedicine #holistichealth #mold #rootedfxnutrition #rooted #rootednutrition #functionalnutrition #ranchocucamonga See more

Staggering. Mind blowing Toxins are all around us - from the food we eat, the water we drink, the air we breath (thank you Inland Empire), the chemicals we use in our homes, our beauty products, plastics, etc. With almost 1 billion pounds of pesticides sprayed each year - that should be criminal. Pesticides are specifically sprayed on plants to protect them from pests like weeds, microbes, fungi, insects, rodents, etc. In order to achi...eve this, the pesticides must have some degree of toxicity (hence the biohazard suit). In humans the toxic effects of prolonged exposure to pesticides is known, or suspected to cause birth defects, toxicity to fetus, benign or malignant tumors, genetic changes (yikes), blood disorders, nerve disorders, endocrine disruption, and reproductive challenges. We have the ability to reduce our overall body burden by reducing our toxin exposure. Steady steps towards reducing your personal toxic burden can keep you healthier, and keep chronic disease at bay. Each of us has the ability to daily reduce our toxic burden by implementing cleaner food options. Simply implementing organic, non-GMO food options into the home is a great place to start. We deserve better. #rootedfxnutrition #rooted #functionalnutrition #integrativenutrition #nutrition #organic #toxins #toxinexposure #pesticides #buyorganic #nongmo #ranchocucamonga #ranchonutritionist See more

Who doesn’t love cilantro? Well- I guess for the few who are genetically wired to perceive the taste of cilantro as a bit too soapy, I think most of us can say we love this beautiful little green herb. Cilantro (Coriander) has some good health benefits including: the ability to support healthy detoxification of harmful metals like lead, aluminum, arsenic and mercury which can be contributing factors in neurological disease, infertility and heart disease. ... Have dental amalgams? As we eat, these can leach mercury into our system. Cilantro can help reduce this exposure, but ultimately finding a biological dentist to safely remove the amalgams will be the best option down the road. Cilantro is also a known antioxidant fighting oxidative stress throughout the body, can help calm nerves and anxiety, support emotional stress, and support digestion. Cilantro contains vitamins A, C, K and traces of B vitamins. Also contains the minerals calcium and potassium. #rootedfxnutrition #rooted #functionalnutrition #integrativenutrition #nutrition #cilantro #coriander #heavymetals #heavymetaldetox #antioxidant #ranchocucamonga #ranchonutritionist See more

I like to think of the gut as an ecosystem. There is much we know, and much we will continue to learn about the gut microbiome, and how the many microbes here influences one’s overall health. We know that disruptions in our gut bacteria can induce intestinal inflammation, and increase gut permeability. What is gut permeability? Gut permeability, or leaky gut is when the integrity of the epithelial barrier of the gut lining is altered, allowing ma...terial inside the gut to pass through the cells lining the gut wall. Gut permeability and Immune System: The gut contains a large amount of immune cells within it. Imbalances within the gut can lead to inappropriate firing of these immune tissues - creating local, and systemic symptoms. Some causes to gut permeability include poor dietary choices, stress, psychosocial stress, gut imbalances like dysbiosis, food allergies, toxins and toxic overload, etc. Symptoms of Gut Permeability can cause gut disturbances, mood imbalances, expressions on the skin, poor immune system, food cravings, and of course the development of autoimmune disease. As Hippocrates stated 2500 years ago all disease starts in the gut. We continue to learn everyday how our modern world has greatly disrupted the health of our gut. Knowing where your unique imbalances may be will best support overall well-being and improvement in health, and symptoms. Nutrition and gut healing is imperative. I know first hand the benefits of proper nutrition (for ME), gut healing and toxic exposure removal to halt my Hashimotos. Being able to actively halt the autoimmune process is a beautiful thing. Know your unique triggers, and imbalances. It can be complex, and is guaranteed to be different for each person. #rootedfxnutrition #rooted #functionalnutrition #integrativenutrition #nutrition #leakygut #gutpermeability #galtmalt #gutinflammation #gutbrainaxis #microbiome #dysbiosis #autoimmine #ibs #ibd #gut See more

Magnesium - known as the relaxation mineral, or nature’s Valium. Today we are seeing many deficient in this essential mineral. This is due to consumption of foods devoid of magnesium, such as diets high in processed foods, meat and/or dairy. We are also becoming more aware of soil depletion, where today’s soils are less robust in several essential minerals, including magnesium. And lastly, STRESS. Stress depletes magnesium. Yet, it’s also needed to combat stress (an...d supports relaxation to support sleep). We could write all day on the benefits of magnesium, but some of its higher level functions include: its role to catalyze most chemical reactions in the body, producing and transporting energy, synthesizing protein, transmitting nerve signals and relaxing muscles. Some physical expressions of magnesium deficiency may include: anxiety, migraines, fatigue, elevated cholesterol, hypertension, asthma, etc. Food sources of magnesium include kelp, almonds, cashews, brazil nuts, pecans, walnuts, tofu, soy beans, brown rice, figs, dates, collard greens, shrimp, avocado, parsley, beans, barley, dandelion greens, and garlic. The most absorbable forms are magnesium citrate, glycinate, taurate, or aspartate, although magnesium bound to Kreb cycle chelates (malate, succinate, fumarate) are also good. To properly absorb magnesium we need a lot of it in our diet, plus enough vitamin B6, vitamin D, and selenium to get the job done. Avoid magnesium carbonate, sulfate, gluconate, and oxide. They are poorly absorbed (and the cheapest and most common forms found in cheap supplements) Lastly, measuring magnesium. The most common testing method is serum magnesium. This will show us how much magnesium is floating in the blood, not the level that is actually getting absorbed. Red blood cell (RBC) magnesium markers provide a better insight into potential magnesium deficiency, and how much magnesium is truly getting absorbed. We love our magnesium! #magnesium #naturesvalium #relaxationmineral #mglove #functionalmedicine #functionalnutrition #integrativenutrition #rootedfxnutrition #rooted #stress #sleep #anxiety #asthma #migraine #fatigue #ranchocucamonga

Inflammation is a necessary response to an injury or infection within the body. Like a signaling system, inflammation will inform the immune system to respond to and heal damaged tissue - as we see with DAMPs (damage associated molecular patterns), and we also see the need to defend the body against foreign invaders like viruses and bacteria - known as PAMPs (pathogen associated molecular patterns). However, trouble ensues when inflammation is not properly resolved, as this step is essential to healing. Understanding triggers to inflammation, and how to best support the immune system’s response to inflammation will be necessary for addressing the inflammatory response for each individual. #rootedfxnutrition #rooted #functionalnutrition #integrativenutrition #nutrition #inflammation #dampsandpamps
