Happy 4th of July from the Cal Poly Rodeo Team!

Rodeo Boosters 22.06.2021

Happy Early 4th of July! Have fun and be safe out there this weekend. On this Friday we showcase Honorary Director Joanie Ketcham. Growing up with four sisters on a cattle and produce ranch in Salinas Valley was a natural fit to be involved in rodeo, especially the California Salinas Rodeo. The rodeo was a huge part of our lives. My mom was a Rodeo Hostess (queen) as a young girl and four of us followed in her footsteps. My dad was a director for many years and served as Pres...ident in 1966 and 1967. My mom was a committee person for years and became an honorary director since women were not allowed to be directors at that time. I served for years as a committee person in various areas and my sons, Ross and Tyler have been committee men. Of course, after finishing nursing school and moving to San Luis Obispo in 1969, the Poly Royal Rodeo was one of my interests. I was one of the founding members of the Cal Poly Rodeo Boosters in 1972 and remember each one of us donating $50 to get the organization started. From serving as President of the Boosters, chairing and judging the Poly Royal queen contest to organizing the VIP tent and Champion’s Weekend roping I have enjoyed every minute of my involvement. I also had lots of fun times painting the stalls with friends and roping in the alumnae roping. My sons have been involved pretty much all their lives in Poly Royal Rodeo from team roping to helping out at the arena. After managing the family cattle business for many years, I now rely heavily on their help. I still love to rope and work cattle and still love supporting and cheering on our rodeo athletes and hope to continue on for many years. GO MUSTANGS See more

Summer time is here and hopefully everyone stays cool this weekend! Today's member is our very own parent representative Leah Cochrane. Leah is the System Operator at Talley Farms in Arroyo Grande and has worked at Talley Farms since 1990. She was born in Bishop CA and graduated from Cal Poly in 1987 with a major in Ag Business with a focus in marketing. She has had a connection to rodeo her whole life. She competed in Jr Rodeo, and High School Rodeo. She married Clint in 1988 and accompanied him on the rodeo trail when possible. Their daughter Tyree was born in 1998. Clint and Leah served on Jr Rodeo and High School Rodeo boards throughout Tyree’s grammar/high school years and still helps whenever needed with College Rodeo.

John W. Johnny Jones Jr. was born in August 1960 in Santa Maria, California. He grew up playing football, baseball, and basketball. Jones’ athleticism eventua...lly spurred him, at age 15, to follow in the rodeo footsteps of his father, John W. Jones Sr., who was the 1956 Rookie of the Year and NFR Steer Wrestling Champion in 1970. A two-time California high school state champion steer wrestler and tie-down roper in 1977 and 1978, Jones was the 1979 NIRA West Coast Region bulldogging champion. Named 1981 overall PRCA Rookie of the Year, Jones joined his father in becoming the first-ever father and son to both earn the honor. He qualified for the NFR 10 times in steer wrestling, winning the 10-head NFR average in 1998, and World Steer Wrestling Champion titles in 1984, 1988, and 1989. Though bulldogging was Jones’ specialty, he competed in all timed events in every major rodeo and many small- and medium-sized rodeos, too, twice qualifying for the NFR in calf-roping. In 1996 Jones was inducted into the ProRodeo Hall of Fame next to his father, who was an inaugural member in 1979. Today, Jones farms and ranches in Morro Bay, California.

The rodeo world lost a little bit of its yeehaw today with loss of cowboy Mike Mora. Mike is part of the West Coast Rodeo Company, the stock contractor Fortuna ...Rodeo Association (along with many, many other rodeos) uses every year. Mike was always a fixture behind the chutes and around the arena from early morning to late night all rodeo weekend. Mike was also the founding member of the Fortuna Junior Rodeo and dedicated many hours and resources to benefit so many kids in the arena. Mike and his love of and dedication to the sport of rodeo will be greatly missed by us all. ...Well I know some day farther down the road I'll come to the edge of the great unknown There'll stand a black horse riderless And I wonder if I'm ready for this So I'll saddle him up and he'll switch his tail And I'll tip my hat and bid farewell And lift my song into the air That I learned at that dusty fair ‘Sit tall in the saddle, Hold your head up high Keep your eyes fixed where the trail meets the sky And live like you ain't afraid to die And don't be scared, just enjoy your ride’" - Chris LeDoux The Ride #fortunarodeo #farewellcowboy #yeehaw #enjoyyourride #westcoastrodeo #cowboy #fortuna #humboldt #california #ccpra #rodeo
