I love this garden that we created in Pasadena for the most incredible client. It’s a craftsman style home with large trees all around the property that gave us a significant amount of shade and dappled sunshine to work in. We were able to use a variety of ferns and wonderful ground covers that would hug the edges of the boulders and soften the craggy structures of the stone. This garden epitomizes the word sanctuary which is my overriding mandate for creation when I walk into a garden

There is something about hand drawing anything, everything. I know I could have generated this fence in a heartbeat with AutoCAD but there’s something about seeing it hand drawn that, when you see it built, it has all the more meaning to it.

Visiting family in Alabama for the holidays and had to take time out to visit the USS-ALABAMA. Such a potent reminder of the cost of FREEDOM and just how cavalierly one can flirt with the idea of throwing it away with a phone call to an authoritarian despot. Allies are worth protecting and fighting for. I’ve said my piece, I miss my father every day.

These pictures were taken last weekend in the small courtyard garden of a Spanish style bungalow we finished last year in Leimert Park. In less than a year the Boston Ivy that I promised the clients would look so beautiful on this painted brick wall is doing just what I knew it would. Creeping everywhere, it’s green and pink/orange tendrils are now exploring every inch of this once average looking wall adding layers of color and texture while blurring the lines between past..., present and future. The green and black elephant ears that struggled in the summer heat when we first planted them are now going wild standing just about four feet tall while the babies tears and Campanula that we planted between the stones of the patio floor are just incredible. It’s the smallest area of this particular garden, but it’s about the most commanding and evocative for me personally as it is here that I can come to be transported back to my childhood and the small garden outside my grandmother’s humble apartment on Doheny Drive. Every project is different, this time we are working on a very traditional Saltbox style home in historic West Adams which will have beautiful pilasters inset with a simple black wrought iron design that will be carried through to the electric gates. Plantings will be Elegant, formal and simple. Our last project was for a beautiful craftsman style home in Pasadena with gardens inspired by traditional Japanese elements found in craftsman architecture. Bamboo, ferns, stone p...athways and hanging lanterns connecting The various outdoor rooms and terraces have been made all that much more hospitable with the use of plants, stone, lighting and water. The project before that was for a classic California Ranch in Sherman Oaks that featured straight edged minimalist geometric beds in the front with a simple plant palette offset by undulating organically shaped beds in the rear garden filled with a variety of colorful trees and plants.
