The River Church of the South Bay 06.07.2021

What a sweet time it was to not only kick off our new summer series, but also be together as one church service at the beach! This summer, we’re starting a 12 week series called Show Me, where we’ll be highlighting 6 women and 6 men in the Bible, as they followed the words and ways of Jesus. Last weekend, we looked at Timothy. We see in this example in the Bible that the success of your life lies in the success of the generations after you. Tune into the video to hear wha...t Todd has to say about Paul starting a ministry of pouring his life into Timothy. Listen to the full sermon on YouTube through the link in our bio! And enjoy the surfers behind Todd catching those Sunday waves.

What would a community of people following the words and ways of Jesus look like? This past Sunday, Luke finished off our 6 week series in 1 Thessalonians with a stunning message from chapter 5, verses 12-28. Listen to the clip to hear more and tune into the full message on YouTube through the link in our bio!

What does a community following the words and ways of Jesus look like, especially in the day and age we live in now? On Sunday, Luke taught the final installment in our 6 week series in 1 Thessalonians and helped shed some light on what that could look like. In a world full of divide a relational chaos, not unlike our world today, Paul prays over the Thessalonians that the God of peace would sanctify them through and through, that their whole spirit, soul, and body would be... wholly surrendered to God. So though we may live in a dreary world now, we as believers of Jesus Christ, can be the first fruits, the vibrancy of Christ to show the world what’s to come when Jesus does return. Tune into the clip to hear Luke unpack being first fruits. Listen to the full message on YouTube through the link in our bio!

Open your heart and help our neighbors this holiday season by coming alongside the LA Mission! River Family, we want to SEE you and what you've been up to/how you've been handling this challenging time. We have an idea to create a short picture video to show on Sunday morning so we can all see each other and get a glimpse into what life has been like while we've been physically apart. Help us make this happen by sending in 3-5 horizontal/landscape photos of you, your family, your Home Church, etc. to [email protected] by the end of the day Wednesday, 9/2 (TOMOR...ROW). Ideas for photos: Pics of you or your family watching the service Grounded Group or other Bible Study/Prayer meeting Family photo Pictures taken at various places in the South Bay Other creative ideas

River Church! This morning we launched a spiritual exercise called Every Moment Holy based on the book by the same name. This is a pic from our early morning prayer to start the day today at the big ramp at Torrance Beach. It was special, holy, and a great beginning. You can read more about the exercise and sign up to attend on our website, riversouthbay.org. Will you consider signing up for one of the spots we’re having this week? Thursday noon, Friday early evening. Our hope is to provide a way for us to mark our day with an awareness that we are not alone and that God is at work in our lives.

On Sunday, Jazz gave us a moment to be silent and ask the Lord to teach us to pray. I immediately thought of this book. I’d been follower of Jesus for 50 years, but reading this [free kindle] classic was so practical in helping me understand HOW to pray. - Kimberly Creasman About the book: The disciples had been with Christ, and seen Him pray. They had learnt to understand something of the connection between His wondrous life in public and His secret life in prayer. And so... they came to Him with the request, ‘Lord, teach us to pray.’ What were the secrets behind the prayer life of Jesus? Jesus gathered His disciples around Him and shared with them all they needed to know. Murray beckons us to join the disciples encircled around Jesus. He guides us deep into the heart of Christ’s teachings on prayer, inviting us to enter more fully into the mysterious beauty and spectacular power of prayer. About the author: Andrew Murray (18281917) was a South African writer, teacher, and Christian pastor. Murray considered missions to be "the chief end of the church." Andrew pastored churches in Bloemfontein, Worcester, Cape Town and Wellington, all in South Africa. He was a champion of the South African Revival of 1860. In 1889, he was one of the founders of the South African General Mission (SAGM), along with Martha Osborn and Spencer Walton. After Martha Osborn married George Howe, they formed the South East Africa General Mission (SEAGM) in 1891. SAGM and SEAGM merged in 1894. Because its ministry had spread into other African countries, the mission's name was changed to Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF) in 1965. AEF joined with SIM in 1998 and continues to this day. He died on January 18, 1917, four months before his eighty-ninth birthday. Over the years he has influenced many, including Jessie Penn-Lewis, a key figure in the 1904-1905 Welsh Revival. See more

From Bill MacPhee: Have you ever felt alone in a crowd? I have. We live in a hyper-connected space, and even have thousands of mini-notifications all day long. But do you long for deep, soul-nourishing, life-infusing connection? We want something, or someone, who can fill us with courage and direction along the trailhead that beckons us beyond ourselves [check out James' sermon from last week - so good!]. We have just such an expert guide! As Jesus prepares his disciples to l...aunch into their new mission after his departure, he assures them they will not travel alone. He promises we will have all the resources we could ever imagine, and a way forward to lean strong into his life that is life indeed. See this in John 14:15-27. Frodo: "Come on, Sam. Remember what Bilbo used to say: 'It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no telling where you might be swept off to.'" From Pas James: For me, John 14:1-14 is a trailhead leading to grand new territories in the adventure of faith. In this passage, Jesus invites those who would be his apprentices to lean into his magnificent favor with a reckless abandon; to expect more; to... ambitiously posture themselves toward the horizon. It is the kind of passage that reveals, yet again, that there is more in the mundane of Jesus-following than meets the eye. It is a sign-post that reads: "amazing, dangerous, and beautiful lengths of trail ahead." This Sunday let's take a refreshing gaze into the yonder! Torrance Beach 8:30am Norris Pavilion 10:30am

I think our identity in our faith isn’t characterized by our strength but instead accepting our weakness and allowing Christ to meet us there. Turning to Jesus in the midst of our storms, we can find peace and comfort and hope. Thanks Todd for sharing your insights from your recent experiences of physical suffering. If you missed it, the sermons are always posted on the website. Have a great week! With love, @spice2life

The River Church of the South Bay 19.12.2019

Bundle up for the Beach, 8:30 or join us at THE THEATRE!!! Todd’s on deck for a good sermon tomorrow! The storm that caused the waves to crash against the side of the disciple's boat that ominous night was not the thing to be feared most. It was the one in the boat with the disciples that was even more terrifying than the storm. The times I have encountered storms in my life, I have focused more on the storm than Jesus, the one in the boat with me. I am afraid I have it all... wrong. CS lewis said something so profound in Grief Observed that it is worth repeating. "God has not been trying an experiment on my faith or love in order to find out their quality. He knew it already. It was I who didn't. In this trial He makes us occupy the dock, the witness box, and the bench all at once. He always knew that my temple was a house of cards. His only way of making me realize the fact was to knock it down." I wonder sometimes if I have built my faith on a house of cards and it just needs a good knocking over to realize that what I'm really after is something far more powerful than any storm I might encounter. This in no way diminishes the pain and anguish we feel in the storm. It's real and it hurts. It is to say this passage speaks to our faith and to our focus more than I ever realized.

With more than 70 years of ministry, @billygraham dedicated his life to the Lord. He’s in heaven today. How has Billy Graham inspired you in your pursuit of God? A notable quote from Billy Graham some years ago: "Someday you will read or hear that Billy Graham is dead. Don’t you believe a word of it. I shall be more alive than I am now. I will just have changed my address. I will have gone into the presence of God. - Billy Graham.
