A beautiful example of the power of the hand on the collar from a 2017 fight between Xande and Adam Wardzinski. At a seminar on guard retention, only a few months after this fight, @xanderibeirojj explained to us the emphasis he places on the hand on the collar. It is not just a powerful defensive tool to control and limit the opponent's options, but it should be an immediate and persistent threat on their life! In this sequence, Wardzinski is trying to pressure and pass, ...and makes the mistake of considering the hand on his collar only in that context, as a frame he must crush through or as a tool that might be used to disrupt his balance. When Wardzinski commits just a little too far, Xande reveals the other, life-threatening side of the hand on collar. Suddenly the game for Wardzinski is no longer a question of passing or of not being swept, but of saving his neck!
