Thurs/ New Year’s Eve: 7 AM - 3 PM & Fri/ NYD: 8 AM - 3 PM We are just so appreciative of everyone who’s given us their business this year, or supported us in other ways. TBH, in my 14 years working in customer service, this year I witnessed things that I never thought I would. I’m sure many other folks have too... but we made it through 2020! Together we made it through fires, storms, floods, power outa...ges, politics, sickness and deaths... all the moments where we wondered, how can we possibly keep going? The people who have been kind, encouraging and supportive have kept us going. These moments are fleeting in a quick service environment like a coffee shop but truly touching. Those are the moments to remember from 2020... remember the people who helped you keep going and fighting through whatever your battle is/was. I hope everyone out there can find a silver lining and use it to fuel your fire to keep going every day. New peaberry coffee from Aquires Coffee & Community in Costa Rica is one of my current favorites! It’s an incredibly balanced, complex and sweet cup of coffee with notes of lime, cocoa, hazelnut. Peaberry coffee is special - it’s a natural mutation where the coffee cherry has 1 single smaller, rounder bean instead of 2 beans. That 1 lil bean is getting all the nutrients from the cherry, producing a flavorful and sweeter coffee. Aquires translates to land between rivers in... the Huetar Indigineous language. Founded in 1890, but transformed in 1980 by Alfonso Robelo, who transformed the relationship between farm workers and lab owners by building community and challenging the status quo. Aquires Estate is the largest farm in the country - home to 1800 people! Alfonso’s son Diego now manages the farm. In addition to sustainable and equitable coffee production, Aquiares has focused on the measuring and offsetting the Estate’s carbon footprint. It takes many hands to create a great cup of coffee, but in that moment you’re in the cafe, it all comes down to the hands of the person serving you. We’ve been trying to keep normal hours for a looong time now, but have made a difficult decision to keep our modified hours for the next month. During this time we’ll keep hiring and training new team members so we can eventually go back to longer hours for the holidays. This pandemic has been exhausting for us all, and the things we’ve subsequently experienced I never though I would see in my career in coffee, or customer service. We are OPEN and will continue to be, but today (Fri) will be the last day for outdoor dining due to the new SIP order handed down from the county yesterday. While we are extremely grateful and fortunate to be able to remain open, this is a devastating blow to the small business community. There is no more financial assistance available and this SIP order will undoubtedly cause many more small businesses to close, which means many more folks will be unemployed. The other day... I spoke with someone about the imminent SIP orders, they said they would most likely be laid off again because of how impactful these orders are on restaurants. They told me all they wanted to do was to buy a Christmas tree and put gifts under it for their family. This is heart breaking. But you have the power to make a difference! For people like this and the businesses they work for. The small business community is like a quilt - each unique piece woven together by the hands of the community we are in. People don’t like to talk about their business struggles but I’ll tell you, many of the small boutiques and restaurants in Sebastopol are on the brink and in dire need of your support. We as a community have to lift each other up now more than ever. We know what to do: wear a mask, maintain social distance, wash/sanitize your hands, order take out, get your holiday gifts locally from small makers. This is part of our expansion project and as you can see from the before, much needed. I used to cringe at photos of the building and the shop’s facade. ... I know it’s mostly aesthetics and honestly, when you walk up to the shop you can’t even really see them unless you’re across the street. But I also think it’s a way to help beautify downtown Sebastopol from the outside in. Our downtown in Sebastopol is a web of small businesses, a gateway to the coast and the living room of our community. We have some very old historic buildings that are beautiful and while our building is from the 80’s, it definitely deserves TLC just like the historic ones do! If you are just visiting or if you’re a local, enjoy the beauty of our downtown and help keep it vibrant by shopping small! Back to school is looking a bit different this year. Normally this is an exciting time at Retrograde... seeing our fav kiddos and how they’ve grown, welcoming back teachers and administrators, and hearing about everyone’s summer break activities. The seasonal ebb and flow of a small community coffee shop is something so special, not to be taken for granted... When I think about it, it’s really a compilation of normally mundane moments in our individual lives, that facil...itate the small talk conversations we have over coffee, that in turn connect us with one another and allow us to form deeper connections.
