Did your power blink or go out in the storm? Check your surge protectors! Their ability to protect your electronics can degrade with age, and when they protect against a surge. The MOVs (metal oxide varistors) inside a surge protector are disc-shaped components responsible for shunting surges to ground. This customer's surge protector failed yesterday, taking several pieces of equipment with it; its two MOVs were either worn, or insufficient to cope with the current. They exp...loded (in a way designed to prevent fires) and the surge continued to the attached devices. The protection LED, if a surge protector is equipped with one, may be able to tell you if it's still working; it's always worth replacing your surge protectors once every few years. We can recycle your old or failed ones, and we have a limited stock of replacements. Come on in!

If one or two more of these larger recyclers like ECS Refining goes out of business there could be a state-wide if not nation-wide environmental crisis. CalRecycle, the CA dept. who manages e-waste, is aware but currently they only review new procedures and recycle fees (what you pay when you buy a new TV, which subsidizes local collectors and recyclers) every two years which is just too slow compared with how fast the industry moves. -mike
