Summer is here, and the Beach is the most popular destination around, just as it was over 100 years ago when these friends of the Snyder Family were photographed just south of a local (probably the Manhattan Beach) Pier. You can find this photograph and many more in the Archive of Redondo Beach History on the Library’s Electronic Resources page. Photograph from the Snyder Family Collection. #ThrowbackThursday

"Ground News" was created as "a news destination for everyone, regardless of political ideology." The publication summarizes the major news stories of the day, with a "blindspot" feed that puts a spotlight on news stories that publications from one side of the political spectrum or the other had little to no reporting on.

Monarch butterflies are currently projected at a record low in California (https://www.kqed.org//only-2000-monarch-butterflies-remain), but the milkweed that was planted outside the Main Library has resulted in a thriving habitat. Consider planting some milkweed in your own garden. This site will help get you started: https://www.gardendesign.com/plants/milkweed.html.
Bestselling Eric Jerome Dickey died January 3 after a long battle with cancer at age 59. RBPL patrons can find books by Dickey, including his latest novel "The Business of Lovers," in print, audiovisual, and digital formats in the Library's collection.
Happy Holidays from the Redondo Beach Public Library!
Dedicated part-time Librarians Ed Martinez and Douglas Thompson, with the assistance of Therese Martinez and the use of the Redondo Union High School Archive, have created an account of the 1918-1919 Influenza Epidemic and its effect on the Redondo Beach schools, as reported in the local press of the day. The document also describes how residents dealt with this crisis at the same time as the country was fighting the Great War. The full document is located in the Archive of Redondo Beach history, found on the Library's Electronic Resources webpage: http://sclc-montage.auto-graphics.com/ The Redondo Reflex archives can also be found under Electronic Resources. #ThrowbackThursday
