Redhouse Beef 02.07.2021

Ever wondered how cows keep cool in the summer? Well, they slow down a little and don't get in a hurry about going anywhere and we work them as little as possible. They also don't graze as much in the heat of the mid day and spend more time under the shade. They're pretty tough, though, and fare well through a Bakersfield July!

If you're new to us, welcome to this year's edition of the Redhouse Holiday Table! This is when our Farm Fresh Friday takes a seasonal twist. We've prepared lots of dishes inspired by our garden, orchards, honey bees and of course, beef. We hope you are inspired to try some for yourself and put them on your family's holiday table. We' thought we'd start with dessert first- this cake uses almonds in 3 different forms!

Now that our winter grasses have come up strong, we're back to our normal grazing rotation. That means moving our cattle every 1-2 days intro a fresh paddock.

Cattle are pregnant for 9 months, just like people. When a vet is "preg checking," they can tell how far along a cow is, oftentimes exactly to the day. In our mountain herds, we want to know which months our cattle will be calving as it helps us plan out the year down at Redhouse. In our registered herd, we use actual due dates to make sure we are ready for each calf to arrive!

Did you know chickens lose and regrow their feathers every year? It's called molting and happens right around November as the days get shorter. It helps them reset and build up stores of nutrients to grow a shiny new set of feathers, so they often slow down or even stop laying completely for a few weeks. It's important that they get lots of protein during this time we give them flax seed to help them through the process!

After spending all day on the farm, there's nothing we like better than coming together for a home cooked meal in the evening.and probably talking more about the farm!

Cattle feeding isn't just about the nutrients. Ruminants' unique digestive systems come with a few interesting requirements. Did you know cattle need a certain amount of dry matter in their diets? Alfalfa hay helps us provide that in the winter, when our grass growth is also a little slower. The best part is being able to grow our own, non GMO alfalfa just a few miles away.

Up at the top of our mountain ranch is the original red house- our namesake, and the true 1800s homestead first built on the property. It's a testament to the ranching heritage of our state, and reminds us of all the history that came before us.

Utilizing the whole animal is important to us. We want to honor the animal's life, as well as recognize all the work that went into raising it, by wasting as little as possible. That's why we offer bones, fat, and organ meats in addition to our regular beef cuts. With a little bit of creativity + research, you might find a new favorite recipe that's incredibly nutritious! And as always, we're here to help.

The squeeze chute is one of our most important pieces of equipment on the ranch. It's designed to minimize stress for cattle, while keeping them safely restrained for whatever work needs to be done- whether it's simple weight checks, health checks, or veterinary work.

You can do it in a stock pot, crock pot, or even instant pot- and we have our favorite recipe online and in all of our shipments this week to share. And our bone broth bundle is back in stock with all of the ingredients you need!
