Juneteenth is a day commemorating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States. Juneteenth started in 1865 in Galveston, Texas, two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln. That December, slavery was abolished with the adoption of the 13th Amendment. Juneteenth is now celebrated across the United States every year, on June 19th, and is an official state holiday in 47 states.
