I get this question a lot from my mamas: can I prevent diastasis recti in pregnancy? . The answer is no. . You didn’t do anything wrong that caused it and you can’t do anything to prevent it in your next pregnancy.... . We have no bones over our abdomen so it can expand when you are pregnant. We have to be able to grow somewhere, and sometimes that causes diastasis recti. . There are several studies on this and generally the conclusions are 50-100% of pregnant people will develop diastasis recti. . You can’t prevent it. . It’s not your fault. . You didn’t do something wrong to cause it. . For most people it will heal on its own once you are postpartum. . Some people it won’t, if the separation is larger. . I often see this is my more petite moms or if they had a large baby. The body had to make room somewhere for the baby. . You should avoid exercises where you see doming of your abdomen so you don’t make the diastasis recti worse, but you can’t prevent it. . #diastasisrecti #diastasisrectiexercises #diastasis #diastaseabdominal #diastasisabdominal #diastasisrectirecovery #pregnancy #pregnant #preggo #preggobelly #preggolife #preggoproblems #newmom #firsttimemom #firsttimemommy #firsttimemomma #momtobe #mommytobe #rechargetherapy See more

Sometimes I’m impatient too. . I want you to be better after one or two visits, but healing takes time, especially if you’ve had your pain or problem for awhile. . I was reminded of this today. I wasn’t sure if a few of my patients were getting better with PT and I was already thinking of who else could help them.... . But then, they started making progress, and so we keep going. . Sometimes a consult is all you need and sometimes it’s a few weeks or few months of therapy, but I promise to not keep you coming unless you and I think it’s helping. . #physicaltherapy #pelvicfloor #pelvicfloorphysicaltherapy #rechargetherapy #healingtakestime See more

My lessons from the office. For the office renovation I knew I needed to see the paint on the wall and not just on a paint strip to know if I liked it or not. The realtor pressured me to blindly make a decision. I did and I hated it. So did the contractor.... It’s paint. It’s temporary and can be changed if it’s really awful. I think I was persistent enough in just the right amount of time. My patients though. It’s their health. A patient recently told me she wanted to see a urogynecologist, and I agreed that would be an appropriate doctor for her to see. Well, she has Kaiser insurance (if you’re not from California, Kaiser is it’s own HMO. You see Kaiser doctors and go to Kaiser hospitals only). Her ob/gyn didn’t think she needed to see the urogyn, without even seeing the patient! She just arbitrarily decided that. Based on what, age? I’m not sure why. Unfortunately, in the Kaiser system, you can’t see a specialist until you see the primary care provider, so my patient can’t see the urogyn, even though we both agree that is the best thing for her. . The kicker? My patient works for Kaiser . She’s persistent so I’m confident she will find a way to the doctor she needs, but it shouldn’t have to be this hard in healthcare. My point of all of this. You know your needs the best. Be persistent if your doctor doesn’t listen to you or refer you appropriately (and find a new doctor if you can).

I see and hear this all the time! The symptoms seem like a UTI frequent urination, pelvic pain, burning when you pee. You should definitely get tested for a UTI if you have these symptoms.... I believe in antibiotics as life saving and life giving. Please don’t take this as I’m against medical intervention. However, I wish doctors would stop prescribing antibiotics when the UTI testing comes back negative because they don’t know what else to do. Antibiotics when there isn’t a bacterial infection can disrupt the good bacteria levels, which are necessary for a healthy vagina and gut. If you have UTI symptoms, get tested by your medical provider. If that is negative, see a pelvic floor PT, it may be your pelvic floor muscles causing the symptoms. I’ve seen this over and over in my office. We do a pelvic floor physical exam and that reproduces the UTI symptoms. We treat the pelvic floor muscles and the client feels better. This is also often the case with people who frequently feel like they have a UTI. See a pelvic floor therapist.

Right? . Why isn’t this standard care in America? . It shouldn’t just be for those who have bladder leakage or pelvic pain, either.... . The pregnant body goes through so many changes, but somehow we expect a new mom or birthing person to just be ok. . Meanwhile athletes and older folks get rehab for anything and everything (as they should), but birthing people who have been through a nearly year long physiological change get nothing. Just one quick 6 week check up with the birthing provider. . If you need postpartum rehab find a pelvic floor PT who can guide you safely through not just pelvic specific rehab but how to safely regain your strength and mobility. . #thursdaythoughts #thursdaythought #thursday #thursdaythoughts #postpartumbody #postpartumjourney #postpartum #postpartumfitness #postpartumhealth #postpartumbelly #postpartumworkout #postpartumlife #postpartumrecovery #rechargetherapy #therapyforall See more

Postpartum rehab. . First of all, this should be a thing. For all birthing people. . Most birthing people get no rehab unless they seek it out themselves.... . Your medical check up after birth is making sure the body healed from a medical viewpoint, not a movement point of view. . Postpartum rehab can be anything from pelvic floor therapy, diastasis recti rehab, healing low back pain. I’ve even treated moms for mommy thumb (de quervain’s), wrist pain and neck pain from breast feeding. . There are so many changes that happen in the body during pregnancy and postpartum and most birthing people get no guidance after delivery. . Also, postpartum rehab shouldn’t be just in the early postpartum time. . The postpartum body is going to continue to change for at least a year. . The demands of parenting are also going to change over time. . Kids grow and get heavier, and you still need to lift, hold and carry them, along with all their stuff. . I wish more moms and birthing people could come in for postpartum rehab over a years time or more. . Early rehab might be reducing pain or doing basic strengthening, but 6-12 months later moms might want to and be able to do more intense exercise. . Athletes get months of rehab no problem. It’s time birthing people do as well. . If you are needing some postpartum rehab, no matter if you are weeks or years postpartum, you are worthy of getting help. Call, DM or schedule online to get the guidance you need. . #newmom #pelvicfloorexercises #birth #pregnancy #postpartumbody #postpartumjourney #postpartum #postpartumfitness #momswholift #momswhoworkout #momswhorun #momlife #momlifebelike #rechargetherapy #diastasisrecti #diastasisrectiexercises #diastasisabdominal #diastasisrectirecovery #pelvicfloorphysicaltherapy #pelvicfloor #longbeach #longbeachcalifornia See more

Another Sunday, another hike. . Yes, we are still wearing masks. . No, it does not cause hypoxia or hypercapnia. We are just fine. We would rather be safe than sorry since we both work in healthcare.... . I never hiked much before, it just wasn’t my favorite activity, but I’ve enjoyed these slower weekends exploring local hikes. . I’m grateful to live in a place where we can be outdoors year round, especially this year! . Sunday hikes have been my one time a week to get in a good exercise session (today was 5 hours, 6.5 miles and 1200 foot elevation), get some sunshine and socialize safely. . This has been my one thing to look forward to weekly that isn’t work. . Living alone through a pandemic while working in healthcare can be quite lonely, but I’m so grateful for my friends who have been there to get each other through this year. . Hope is on the way. The first vaccines got shipped today. . I’m not telling anyone whether or not they should get the vaccine, you have to decide that for yourself, but I highly encourage you to educate yourself on the science and data. It’s pretty fascinating. . I’ve definitely been nerding out recently reading about the vaccine trials. I feel like I’m back in college biology again. . I wasn’t sure about this vaccine for a long time, but since I recently started following scientists on here who explained everything and reading the trial outcomes on my own I am excited for it and excited for a way to move forward in life in the coming months. . This year has been rough but I’m grateful for it. . I’m also grateful for scientists who worked hard to develop this vaccine and like to study this stuff and are good at it. I remember hating cellular biology in college. . Hang in there friends, hope is on the horizon. We are living through history. See more

I include myself in this tweet. . Check your resources to make sure they are reliable. . There are a lot of doctors today. I’m a physical therapist and I have a doctorate, so I can use doctor in my name.... . In this age of misinformation verify who you are following. . When I post on here, I’m not writing a research paper, so I’m not citing resources. Some people do that. . There also isn’t a lot of research in women’s health and pelvic floor therapy. . I’m just sharing information that I see clinically. . But, when it comes to bigger issues like the pandemic we are living in, check your resources for who is supporting your point of view. . I’m not saying they are right or wrong, but just because someone has doctor in their name doesn’t mean they are making qualified statements on social media. . A quick google of their name will give you the info you need, and then you can decide from there. . Here are some people I started following who are giving sound scientific advice regarding this pandemic. . They all have full time jobs and are sharing info on their own time, so I think it’s pretty sound advice without a lot of bias or outside influence (like money). . Following these people has given me hope that we will get out of this pandemic in the near future. I would invite you to check them out yourselves. . Who have you found on here that you like and trust? I would love to see more good resources of information. Please share in the comments. . And google me or go to my link in bio or my website to verify who I am. You can also check out my google and Yelp reviews to see what others say about me. Really, go do it. And thanks for following along here and trusting me . . @jessicamalatyrivera @twodustytravelers @kennenhutchison @kinggutterbaby @dr.martaperez See more

Wear a mask. Wear a mask. Wear a mask. . Another weekend another hike in a mask. . I’ve never hiked this much in my life, but I’m enjoying finding new, beautiful hikes in the area.... . I’m happy to see the majority of people wearing masks on the trail. . My friend works at a local hospital and treats covid patients. Listen to this story of the week. . One of her patients, an older gentleman, had been very cautious this entire year. His family begged him to come over for thanksgiving. . His grandsons brought their girlfriends, so more people were at dinner than he expected. . Grandpa got covid from thanksgiving and now he’s in the hospital. None of the other family members got sick. . Don’t be the person who kills grandpa. . Also, unpopular opinion here, but if you got covid because you HAD to go on vacation or to a birthday or wedding or some other gathering or you just don’t like wearing a mask and you got covid, you better be the first one to support local small businesses that now have to be closed. . I’m not shaming anyone who got covid from work, but I’m talking to those of you who didn’t care enough to care about your community. . Tag some small businesses that you love and want to give a shout out to! We all need to be supporting our local small businesses right now. They aren’t the ones spreading covid, but they are the ones who have to shut because covid is so rampant in our community. . More than 10,000 people just in LA county tested positive today! And every day last week was 7-8k positive tests per day. . Wear a mask. . Tag a small business. . We will get through this. A vaccine is coming! . #optoutside #hiking #hikingadventures #elmoro #orangecounty #hike #rechargetherapy #maskup #maskupamerica #wearamask #wearamask #wearamaskplease #wearamasksavelives #supportsmallbusiness #supportlocalbusiness #supportsmallbusinesses See more

Kegels can be important, but pelvic floor therapy is about more than just kegels. . It’s about getting the pelvic floor muscles to work together with the rest of the body. . Somehow the world only got the message about kegels and forgot about the rest of the body.... . If you’ve only been told to do kegels and it isn’t fixing your problem, see a qualified pelvic floor therapist. . #kegelexercises #kegels #kegel #pelvicfloorexercises #pelvicfloorphysicaltherapy #pelvicfloor #pelvicpain #prolapse #incontinence #rechargetherapy #therapyisessential #pelvicfloortherapy #painfulsex #postpartum See more
