Mini-Lesson!: "What is Diabetes?" Diabetes is a disease where the body cannot make enough insulin or it cannot use insulin properly. There are 4 main types of diabetes and it is important to know the difference. Type 1: Usually occurs before age 40 where the pancreas stops making insulin. Generally treated with supplemental insulin.... Type 2: Pancreas still makes insulin but not enough. The body may also be resistant to its own insulin. Diabetes Due to Medication: Diabetes as a side effect of other medications (i.e. certain steroids). Pre-Diabetes: Blood sugar levels are high but not high enough to be classified as full-blown diabetes. Those in this state are at high risk to develop type 2 diabetes & heart disease. -------------------- Physical activity as exercise can help to combat the symptoms of diabetes. It is recommended to exercise at least 30 minutes/day on 5 or more days of the week with moderate-intense activity to promote health. How much physical activity is needed to minimize weight gain in previously obese women? According to the American Journal of Nutrition it is an average of 80 minutes per day of moderate activity or 35 minutes per day of vigorous activity for those who are sedentary. What does that mean for you? If you have previously lost weight and want to keep it off you need to up your game to avoid that plateau or worse, gain your weight back.
