Real Estate Magazine 27.06.2021

April REM is out now! I only write one or two stories each year; I had fun doing this, my first in 2021. Also wonderful pieces on Second Chance--Fort Bragg, by ...Laurie York and on Puppy School vs. the Pits of Despair, by Alicia Abuliak. Most of the photos are from my family's pets, like Crumble and Cholula on the cover. I shot that on the Ten Mile Dunes the other day. I hope you'll pick one up wherever REMs show up all over the county. Or read it online at www.realestatemendocino.com. Our Absolutely Amazing Humane Society really is...AMAZING! See more

Alicia Bailes had Holly Madrugal of Word of Mouth Magazine and me of Real Estate Magazine on her interview show about local journalism last Friday. It was so fu...n schmoozing around with two kindred spirits on the topics of publishing and writing and editing and fighting about punctuation and such. You can still listen to us on KZYX.org Jukebox. It was on at 9 am Friday. See more

I was on KZYX this morning, an interview by Christy Wagner. You can still listen to it if you want, at KZYX.com and then click on Jukebox and look for Pivot Point 8/12/2020. We had fun talking about Real Estate Magazine and community a million things. It was Christy's last Pivot Point show, which really makes me sad. She is such a wonderful, curious, positive, vivacious interviewer. It was a pleasure and an honor to be on with her today. http://jukebox.kzyx.org

The story in REM for June is by Alex de Grassi, guitar wizard and--who knew?--great writer, about our county's musicians and musical venues, which, as you can imagine, have been hard-hit by the current situation, with some places actually having to close down and everybody having to cancel gigs. Alex had to postpone his entire tour to promote his new album, The Bridge, which is so beautiful, btw. Listen at www.alexdegrassi.com. Performing artists and performance spaces have b...een mining their deep wells of creativity to get through this bare spot in performance schedules (including me!). No gathering means no audiences, no clapping, no money, no fun. It's a great read, and I hope you will pick up your copy asap before we run out. REM can be found ALL over the county...Coast, South Coast, Anderson Valley, Over the Hill, in Willits and Ukiah. Realty offices, post offices, grocery stores, lodging places and restaurants (opening soon!) And you can also read it at www.realestatemendocino.com. Look for our updated Covid-19 resource list on page 13. Support Local Journalism! Advertise with us! 707.964.2522. Please re-post to your timelines!

Here is another piece from our May edition of Real Estate Magazine. The article this month, called "The New Abnormal," is actually a collection of pieces from d...ifferent coast friends who contribute their energies and creativities and huge hearts to the life here. Each piece lifts my heart a little bit higher. This one is by my sisterfriend Ellen Buechner whose writing always moves me so much. FOOD SOVEREIGNTY AFTER THE TIME OF CORONAVIRUS Ellen Beuchner, Co-Owner, Fortunate Farm: Years before we dreamed we would be farming and feeding the Caspar community, Jef and I traveled up from Gualala one night to hear Raj Patel speak on the subject of food sovereignty at the Caspar Community Center. I was transfixed by Mr. Patel’s theories on food justice and food sovereignty, which went well beyond mere food security to the principles that the people of a place should determine for themselves what is in their food, the manner in which it should be produced and distributed, and how people should have the right to secure the local resources that produce their food. I have been thinking about Raj Patel quite a bit in the face of the economic disaster that accompanies our current medical emergency. We have unique challenges facing us right now, but we also have unprecedented opportunities. We have an opportunity to become humble about our consumerism and reconsider what we truly do or do not need to sustain ourselves. We have an opportunity to become reacquainted with the earth and our bodies in interaction with the earth to produce sustenance for ourselves and others. We have an opportunity to make true strides toward food justice in our community, to make sure that more sustainable systems are put in place as the old ones are stressed, and that no one is left behind in the process. We have an opportunity to harness appropriate technologies that have a place of integrity within new, sustainable systems. Most of all, we have an opportunity to realize that the independent farmers, fisher-folk, foragers, ranchers, and brewers of our coast are not in competition with one another, but in competition with the unsustainable (and unhealthy) corporate corruptions of those timeless arts in the name of profit. To answer this challenge, we must first ask ourselves a question, the answer to which must be supported by every decision we make: When we emerge on the other side of this challenge, who do we want to be? Shall we be less acquisitive, less afraid, more just, more diverse, more tolerant? If we want it, these things can happen. And then we can teach it to any other community that wants it, too. Talk to your neighbors (at a safe distance). There is a crack in the rock. Get your fingers in there and pull. fortunatefarm.org
