November is National Diabetes Month! Every year over 18,000 people under the age of 20 are diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, also known as Juvenile Diabetes (it’s completely separate from type 2 diabetes that we often see adults diagnosed with). In 1992 at the age of 15 months old, I received my diagnosis, making me one of the youngest kids diagnosed to date. ... It’s been quite the adventure over the years, but I’ve met a lot of really strong, impressive people in the Diabetes community. Here are just a few little bits of my story: I check my blood glucose levels 5-7 times per day, every day. I account for and treat all carbohydrates that I consume, at every single meal. I give shots of insulin (your body produces it naturally!) 4-6 times per day, typically very discreetly. I’m a very old school diabetic: I prefer insulin shots over a device many diabetics prefer to use, called a pump. when my blood glucose levels get low, I feel shaky, off-balance, and tired. I like to treat my lows with chocolate milk. when my blood glucose is high, I few thirsty and lethargic. The only way to treat is with insulin.
