CELEBRATING JUNETEENTH Today we recognize June 19, or Juneteenth, a holiday that commemorates the end of enslavement in the United States. ... Fast Facts: On Sept. 22, 1862, President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation declaring that all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states are, and henceforward shall be free. News of the proclamation reached the final Confederate state of Texas when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, and residents learned enslavement had been abolished. A celebration of song, dance and prayer ensued, and the following year on June 19, the first official Juneteenth was held in Texas. Soon other states began to observe the holiday. Juneteenth celebrations have grown to include showcasing the culture and achievements of African Americans. The holiday is also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Liberation Day and Emancipation Day. Twenty-one Clovis Unified School District African American graduates will be featured on A California Juneteenth - Celebrating Black Excellence, that airs on ONME Network June 19-July 21. The program includes Black artists, musicians, dancers, poets and more, along with a celebration of 2021 Black graduates throughout California. To watch: https://www.myonmetv.com/specialevent
CHECK YOUR CHILD’S APPS Drug dealers are connecting with high school, intermediate school, and even elementary school students through their phones. Social media and cash apps make it easy to contact and sell drugs that could take your child’s life. Clovis Unified is partnering with local law agencies to raise the awareness of the dangers of fentanyl. Be aware of your child’s online activity. Look for references to street names for fentanyl such as blues, perc, percy, oxys, ...fent and smackers. #FentanylDangersAreReal #TalkWithYourChild #ClovisUnifiedStrong See more

misoka, New Year’s Eve, is considered the second-most important day in Japanese tradition as it is the final day of the old year and the eve of New Year’s Day,... the most important day of the year. Families gather on misoka for one last time in the old year to have a bowl of toshikoshi-soba or toshikoshi-udon, a tradition based on eating the long noodles to cross over from one year to the next. At midnight, many visit shrines or temples for Hatsumde. Shinto shrines prepare amazake to pass out to crowds and most Buddhist temples have large cast bells that are struck once for each of the 108 earthly desires believed to cause human suffering.
Wishing you warmth and togetherness this Kwanzaa
