MESSAGE FROM THE SHERIFF (DECEMBER 8, 2020) TO THE CITIZENS OF MERCED COUNTY FROM SHERIFF VERN WARNKE By now most of you have received an alert over your cellph...one from the State of California regarding how serious COVID is. This is just a tool that the State is using to reach you as a reminder about the COVID virus. New public health stay at home order in your area. COVID-19 is spreading rapidly. Stay home except for essential activity. Wear a mask. Keep your distance. Visit covid19.ca.gov Sheriff Vern Warnke would like the citizens of Merced County to know that the Merced County Sheriff's Office will not be enforcing the "Stay At Home Order". We will continue to "do business as usual". The Sheriff's Office will continue to go after the criminals that are committing actual crimes. We will not be going after anyone gathering during the holidays. We feel that people should take the COVID issues seriously, but we are not going to go door to door to make sure people are following the "no gathering" or "stay at home" orders. With holidays approaching, the Sheriff's Office will continue to focus our attention on criminal activities and not COVID enforcement. We are all adults and by now everyone should know that COVID is real and knows the consequences of being reckless. As adults, we should know what steps need to be taken as a community to keep ourselves safe (ie: wear your face coverings, wash your hands, and social distancing). So far there is no data to support a curfew or closing of certain businesses as opposed to others. Schools are allowed to be open but not churches, where's the data? I ask that everyone do what you can to protect yourselves and your loved ones. My colleagues throughout the state are taking a similar stance with regard to enforcing COVID orders. Please continue to be safe and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
