Ranch of a Thousand Gems

After 21 months our avocados are ready. Each of the photos are before and after. We only picked one section yesterday which netted approx. 800 pounds. This first bin went to Green Acres for our 49th Anniversary. The Gem avocado can be planted at a greater density than Hass. The trees are more compact, with fruit borne on the interior and protected from sunburn by the leaves. Trees can be planted at 300-400 trees per acres which is why the ranch is named Ranch of a Thousand Gems. By contrast, the Hass variety is typically planted at 184 trees per acres. As the trees mature they are pruned once or twice a year, in the winter and after harvest, depending on planting densities, tree vigor and market conditions.
