Meet Alaya Vautier! She states: You'll discover unique textures, a lovely selection of gems, contrasting mixed metals and other surprises in my jewelry! I start with a base of sterling silver and create unique pieces with beautiful stones, enamel, gold, bi-metal etching and textures. Everything is hand fabricated with a few one-of-a-kind cast pieces. I oxidize the silver to bring out the contrast of the textures and lend a more earthy feel to the silver. I enjoy experiment...ing with new styles and ideas and rarely make the same item twice! Alaya is a very conscious creator. Her MLK necklace is part of a series of social justice and peace. A strong relationship with wildlife has played a major role in human philosophy and the development of culture. Direct encounters with animals evoke a sudden wonder and respect. Their ...vivid life makes us aware of the source that creates and sustains all beings. Long before humans existed, they worked out the sequences of life in millions of variations. The various life forms that I choose to represent in my work are organic and temporary. Yet they are also connected to the universal patterns that design our reality, arrangements that involve all of space and time. These artworks are my way of creating sacred temples to these fleeting forms of insect, bird and beast. I’m attempting to pause the flow of time, study the form and function of each animal and then create a lasting and celebrated homage. Our cohorts at @curatedbythesea posted a video of their space so we thought we would follow their lead! @rblitzergallery @artscouncilsc @radiusgallery @curatedbythesea started a conversation last fall about representing local artists. Each of us (Curated, Blitzer, Radius) had been pinged by artists in a multitude of ways throughout 2020. Hey, I’ve been making so much work during the pandemic. Or whew, being in the studio seven days a week is changing everything I do.... Or I cannot keep up with my commissions. And mostly, I need something to aim towards. I need a goal. I need a reason to make. So this 450 Pieces is our response. I am pretty proud of this partnership- Blitzer and I have talked about it for years and it took the nudge from @curatedbythesea to make it happen and the organization of the @artscouncilsc. It was up to the artists to submit. (Yes there were size guidelines but that’s about it). So here’s to partnerships. May they all be colorful and fulfilling. And remember... this is just the beginning. I have high hopes of adding in public art and upping 450 to 1000+ IT CAN HAPPEN! As long as artists keep making and signing up with the Visual Arts Network, our pool is plentiful.
