Just like the real estate world stages houses to look perfect and hide clutter, @instagram and #socialmedia showcase our staged selves. Instagram influencers are being paid thousands of dollars for photos that make us want to be like them. The images are selling fake happiness and a fake lifestyle, and capitalizing on our insecurities. This photo is a perfect example of a staged Instagram photo. The coffee was ordered for the shoot but not touched, because I can’t do caffei...ne after 1 Pm or I’m up all night and the sunglasses are the photographers. It’s a great photo, but it’s fake. Sure, I’m happy. Sure, I love coffee. But rarely do I leisurely sit around coffee shops - I run a business and have three young kids . As a therapist to many adolescents, I always encourage my clients to unfollow influencers who make them feel like they are not enough. I have been know to show them photos and feeds of #bopo accounts during session and give them printed out lists I have compiled of influencers to follow and documentaries to watch. Authenticity is the key to happiness. I truly, truly believe that. Please increase discernment in your social media usage, see through the advertised image, and know that your own life is perfect - stages or not. #teenmentalhealth #teenmentalhealthawareness #adolescentmentalhealth #adolescents #mentalhealthawareness #socialmediaharmsyourmentalhealth #socialmediabreak #therapistsofinstagram #therapyforteens #octherapist #octherapy #mft #ocshrinks #therapyiscool #therapyworks #tictokmemes #tictok #teenmentalwellness #teentherapist #depressionawareness #anxietyawareness #cancelcultureistoxic #therapistsofinstagram

Happy Graduation! While the physical impact of Covid-19 disproportionately impacted older age groups, the psychological and emotional impact of quarantine life has severely impacted adolescent and young adult age groups. According to the Irish Journal of Psychological Medicine, Both immediate and longer-term factors through which young people are affected include social isolation, changes to the delivery of therapeutic services and almost complete loss of all structured oc...cupations (school, work and training) within this population group. The stage of development of adolescence according to the Erickson model is identity vs confusion.....so in a time when a sense of self and identity is being formed through the above types of occupations, quarantine stripped teens of the very markers of this crucial stage. Confusion has led to increased rates of depression, anxiety, suicide, and loss of a sense of purpose. Couple this with a drastic end to your high school experience - never seeing your class again or having the rite of passage of pomp and circumstance or starting college from your bedroom: this absolutely adds to the confusion! If Covid-19 has impacted crucial milestones in your development, you are not alone. Therapists and mental health advocates are working around the clock to provide support, groups, and resources so you do not feel alone. Get support - your grief matters! #adolescentmentalhealth #teenmentalhealth #teenmentalhealthawareness #graduation2021 #happygraduation #graduates #developmentalmilestones #teenchallenge #therapy #therapist #therapistsofinstagram #edtherapist #teentherapist #adolescenttherapy #familytherapist

I am excited to officially introduce my group practice: Monarch Rising Therapy And Nutrition Services located in OC, CA! The launch of this practice is bittersweet. A beautiful new asset to the community where we hope to serve many clients in their journey to find hope and healing. And an awareness that a growing therapy practice is a sign of how much covid has impacted mental health as well as the fact that diet culture, body image distress, and eating disorders are still ev...er present in our society. Our team is here to treat each individual in a well rounded approach that uniquely supports them. We believe that therapy is the place to transform the beliefs and behaviors that keep you from being the best version of yourself. Now is the moment to heal so you can rise from the fears and the pain to freely fly and live your fullest potential. In our society we often discuss our eating and exercise habits with one another because it becomes a sense of our identity and gives us a sense of self-worth or a sense of shame if we feel it’s not healthy enough for diet culture standards. Food is just a pleasurable fuel source, not a part of who we are. When food does not have its neutral place in our lives but rather becomes a prime focus of our day and our connections with others, it takes a seat of power in our lives t...hat can keep us from living fully in our purposes in other areas. Letting go of controlling and hyper focusing on food and your body, which is also a sign of privilege and lack of food insecurity that needs to be checked, allows food to fall further down the priority ladder so you can focus on more valuable parts of life! #healthism #healthisnotwealth #healthbehaviors #foodobsession #womeneatingfood #realwomeneat #antidietculture #antidiet #antidietproject #antidietdietitian #therapistsofinstagram #foodfreedom #foodfreedomforever #foodfreedomcoach #edtherapist #intuitiveeating #intuitiveeatingcoach #intuitiveeatingjourney #shiftyourvalues #shiftyourperspective #shiftyourfocus #bodyimagemovement

If your mental health is suffering as a result of this pandemic, it is normal. You are not alone. This is HARD. To the medical teams, doctors and nurses on the front lines saving lives and fighting covid in the hospitals, hallways, and tents in parking lots - you get a STANDING OVATION. You Are A Hero . But mental health is suffering along with the physical health related symptoms of covid. To be a mental health worker and healer in 2020, and now into 2021, has bee...n a game changer for this field. The physical and emotional stress of the pandemic, the racist acts of violence, the political unrest, and the social isolation from social distancing have severely impacted mental health and cannot be ignored in the therapy setting. Therapists are not only handling the impact on themselves and their families, but helping clients navigate the mental health challenges that occur in current cultural conflict, oppressive systems that have not been dismantled, and the inter generational trauma caused by historical oppression. Therapy is a safe space to unpack all of this! Don’t let tricky advertising confuse you....

The beautiful therapy modality of Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) describes emotions like waves that ebb and flow. The key to healing our reactivity to our emotions is by allowing ourselves to ride the waves, using self care during the intense peak and avoiding bailing on the feelings when they are uncomfortable by using self destructive behaviors. This surrender of a ride allows the emotions to peak and fall in due course and not be pushed under the rug only to rear the...ir heads at a future time. And yet.....we are hitting a year of this pandemic, of intense protests and riots, of big conversations on social injustice and of intense political conflict. It seems no one can catch their breath. Self care has had to be massively redefined due to the prolonged stress on our bodies and the loss of available coping skills thanks to the need to quarantine ourselves. If your mental health is struggling as a result of this prolonged crisis situation, please know that is normal and you are not alone. Find the available coping skills and the safe people who SEE you and help you reconnect to yourself and your values. Seek professional support, medication, medical care, or support groups to help you navigate how to soothe and stabilize your body. This pandemic is a strong riptide, undertow, storm, etc....please prioritize your mental health! Goals should be about CONNECTING you to the values that help you find meaning in life. Focusing on external changes that force you to be someone you are not because they are influenced by a system that forces you to change in order to fit in is a DISCONNECTION. This year, our mental health needs to be more of a priority than ever since covid life disconnected us from so many things that gave our lives a sense of purpose: our jobs, our momentum, and each other. This year t...he resolution needs to be connection with self, not disconnection. What are you hoping to reconnect with this year??
