As a business owner, we are faced with an uncertain future and many things we need to address quickly as things have changed. You might also be asking yourself: How do I market my business during this time? SHOULD I market my business during this time?... The answer is absolutely yes, and here’s why: Most of us do not have experience in negotiating the current atmosphere in terms of our small businesses. In a crisis, different ideas emerge. Some feel that it is a good idea to pull back or stop marketing. Others want to continue current efforts or even ramp it up as an opportunity to get ahead. The truth is that in this environment, marketing becomes very important. It offers reassurance to the public that your business is strong and reliable in the marketplace. It also illustrates the value that you hold in the personal relationships that you have built throughout the years. Option #1: Embrace being a victim, pause all advertising efforts, and brace for the impact. Option #2: Deeply look at your business and take advantage of this opportunity to get ahead by redirecting and adapting. Plan and get ready for the rebound. Now is not the time to stop marketing your business; it’s the time for you to be even more strategic in planning and implementing marketing initiatives! We’re taking our own advice too. If you’re open for business, let people know! Continuing to market your business through this time can be as simple as letting customers know that you’re open, you care, and you’re available to assist them through this changing environment. Whether it’s reaching out to talk about your change of office location and hours, offering new products, helping disseminate government advice, or just keeping people’s spirits up, it’s important to keep in contact with your customers so they don’t forget about your brand, even if it’s from your kitchen table. Set Yourself Up for Success At some point, this will pass. When that time comes, do you want to be starting from scratch with your marketing again? Or do you want to be ahead of the competition, building on the efforts you’ve already put in? The reality is there are still targets to hit and business plans to keep on track. What you do now, from a marketing perspective, will ensure that you can hit the ground running when this crisis is over. It is a good time to turn to brand building. Think about ways to emphasize what your brand really stands for and why you exist. Make sure your Visual Voice is clear and consistent. History shows that after a crisis, consumer buying springs back stronger than ever. It’s important that when we do return to our day-to-day spending, consumers turn to your brand. Make sure you’ve got your plan-of-action in place and ready to go.
