When it comes to #solar Balance of System (BOS) costs, most preliminary BOMs only include racking and inverters, and not the cables/wires and other components that make up the BOS. Given that the cost of wiring is very expensive, calculating wiring needs up front is essential to develop a more accurate and informed total project cost analysis. PVCAD automates BOM calculations, empowering developers to account for BOS accessory parts at the outset and factor the complete BOS into project costs from day one.
Many factors inform decisions about the utility-scale tracker or fixed-tilt project site selection, but until now, it’s been difficult to quickly determine exactly how much of the land is rackable. Solar Power World 's "Rackability: A sophisticated measure of utility-scale site viability" describes how sophisticated #solar design software like PVSketch Mega precisely computes the percentage of total land area on which mounting systems can be installed.
If you’re not concerned with utility-scale shrinkage, you should be. Read more at Solar Builder about how shrinkage in utility-scale layouts is becoming increasingly common and more problematic for #solar projects built on hilly terrain and other challenging topography.

In 2018, research scientist Ian Marius Peters demonstrated through a study of PV installations in Delhi, India, that heavy air pollution could reduce the power of a solar panel by at least 12 percent. Fast forward to 2020 when India enacted a drastic and sudden lockdown at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic and Peters was able to use the sudden 50% reduction in pollution to continue his research. Within the first days of the stay-at-home order, the #solar panels in his 2018 sample were already receiving 8 percent more light, making up two-thirds of the inefficiencies lost through smog. The glimpse of what a future free of fossil fuels might look like offers a ray of hope about our post-pandemic future.
