NEWS RELEASE FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 29, 2021 FRIENDS OF HUMANITY ... The Punjabi American Heritage Society (PAHS), in collaboration with other like minded individuals in Sacramento, Roseville and Bay Areas, hosted a virtual event entitled Empowering our Future Generation on March 6, 2021. The purpose of this humanitarian event was to create awareness and generate support for the farmers’ struggle. The event was well attended and garnered much needed financial support through the generosity of the attendees. The plan for the distribution of funds consists of 3 categories: scholarships for children of farmers impacted by hardships, support to non profit organizations working on the ground as well as for public awareness and education of humanitarian issues. PAHS has partnered with a non-profit organization known as Sahaita to help fund their Adopt a Farmer Family program. Our contribution will create scholarships to support and fund the education of 51 children of farmers. Each scholarship will be $500 with a total of $25,500 dedicated for this purpose. We will also give $10,000 grants to the following three non-profit organizations, two of which are providing on the ground support. Dr. Swaiman Singh’s non-profit, Five Rivers Heart Association. Dr. Swaiman is a cardiologist from the United States who went to India to provide health care for the farmers. The conditions on the ground have convinced him to stay. Grants in the amount of $10,000 each will go to Seva, Selfless Service and Jakara Movement, which are two local non-profits. Additionally, we will develop program(s) for the education and awareness about these issues. A small event, with Covid precautions in place, was held at the Sikh Community Center in Yuba City on Sunday, March 28th. The purpose of this event was to present the donations in the form of grants to the selected non-profit organizations. Representatives of Jakara, Seva, Five Rivers Heart Association and Sahaita were present. Each organization gave short presentations about their plans for the use of donated funds. It was a very emotion-filled afternoon complete with opportunities for networking and team-building. The Punjabi American Heritage Society is in gratitude and proud of our community for coming together to help support the Farmer’s Struggle.

Thanks to all those friends who liked or shared our last FB post. It reached over 16 K. Many of you want to know more about the history. We are posting 3 years old interview with Dr. Gulzar S Johl. He was one of the first ophthalmologist in our area. His father Tully Singh Johl was one of the 5 Johl’s who came to Yuba City in 1907. He is now 97 years old. We wish him great health. He shared names of other companions (who were expelled from Bellingham, Wasnington) of his father in this interview.

PunjabiAmerican HeritageSociety 10.11.2020

In September 1907, hundreds of South Asian migrant workers (mostly Sikh men) were violently evicted from the city of Bellingham, Washington. Five of those men who shared the Johl surname later moved to Yuba City, CA. It was the loss of Bellingham and gain to Yuba City. These men became successful farmers and contributed to the development of our area. Nand Singh Johl (from Jandiala, Jalandhar, Punjab) was one of those men and his grandson Kulwant S Johl and his family curre...ntly farm over a thousand acres of land. Dr Gulzar S Johl’s father Tully S Johl was also among those five Johls who originally came from the Jandiala village of Punjab. Many of their children, grand and great grandchildren are successful professionals settled all over the USA and pursuing their American dreams. Residents of Bellingham and CIty council have built An Arch of Healing and Reconciliation in April 2018. Kulwant and his wife Jaspal visited Bellingham and contributed towards the fund and participated in the installation ceremony. Earlier (September 2017) Dr Jasbir S Kang and his wife Sukhjit participated during the groundbreaking ceremony to represent the Yuba CIty community. We thank the city of Bellingham for this great gesture to heal the past. We are sharing some pictures and video clips on PAHS FB from these events.

We (PAHS) likes to congratulate Everest family (and all contributors) for the publication of series of books to teach Gurmukhi at High School level in California. It is their 6 years of labor and efforts of many community members and well-wishers whose work will benefit future generations to learn the Punjabi as second language in many high schools.

Most likely a first time event where our community discussed the scars of collective trauma, at a seminar entitled: 1984 And Aftermath-Psycosocial Aftershocks in the Sikh Community. This event provided insight into the healing process from a scientific/Medical perspective and was held on June 6th, 2020 at the Sikh Community Center. This seminar also addressed how the traumatic events of 1984 have contributed to mental health issues and drug problems in our community. ... The Punjabi American Heritage Society provided a platform for the presenters and does not necessarily agree or disagree with all the viewpoints presented. We invite the community to take advantage of the opportunity to watch this program with an open mind. Please share with your contacts. https://youtu.be/VXRE_kVYFbM
