There comes a time when it’s expected to assess your existing data analytics portfolio. A lot of investment $ may have been spent over the years and possibly ROI has not been met. This year we’ve stretched our budgets thin and committing to new investments may not be a priority. However, more agile organizations will be looking to monetize data either increase top line or improve efficiencies. Everyone needs to make decisions from insights sooner or later. If your analytics... will take months or over a year to answer business questions, it’s time to rethink your strategy. Cloud and even on premise data solutions don’t have to be astronomically more than your budget. We can provide the right assessment and recommendation to meet your needs, provide you different options that will make your CFO sleep at night, and deliver proven solutions to make business decisions immediately. #data #assessment #analytics See more

What’s your mission? If you’ve ever been to CA, there are lots of Spanish missions like in the image of this post. One wonders why there were missions in CA and that’s a subject that may ignite religious and political opinions. However, to relate missions to business, I always thought that a mission statement was best for startups. It defined your company’s core values and sent a message to your customers and employees of what products and services the company has to offer. ...Well corporate big names in social media, technology, and services may not advertise their mission statements anymore. Contrary to what I thought, mission statements of established corporations still exist in financial reports or corporate headquarters. No doubt there are a myriad of unfortunate businesses that have been impacted with COVID-19 this year and it may be prudent to reassess the future and possibly redefine your mission statement. After all, it refocuses your energy to short term goals to succeed and redefines the future of your company. #missionstatement See more

Hiking is a great way to reconnect with nature and rejuvenate your mind, body, and soul. The adventure to the unknown beyond what you can see in your trail is exciting. New experiences and sights to explore is part of the journey. As business owners or leaders of corporations, we’ve all been handed the unknown and unexpected especially in our current COVID-19 environment. However, beyond what we can expect in the near future and possibly longer, we have to explore new opportunities to make our companies relevant and help our employees in trying times. #opportunities #rejuvenate #rethink

Do you feel like there’s a fence between you and your company’s data? It’s puzzling that when you need access to data to answer business questions, data access continue to be a problem. Data governance and security are without a doubt very critical components in protecting our assets. But lots of cases, I have noticed, processes and red tape have gone awry which prevent analysts from doing their jobs. We sometimes wonder why analysts export data from source systems and oth...er data they can get to the goal is to answer business questions and analysts need to provide these answers immediately for the company to stay relevant. Partnership, collaboration, and corroboration with our technology teams, analytics teams, and everyone else in the organization need to be re-evaluated so we can deliver insights to senior management for prudent decisions. #data #analytics See more

The Bald Eagle, our national symbol and epitome of sovereignity, will soar high for generations to come. Our country, USA, in my opinion is still the best place to live. Despite the noise from political parties, we continue to innovate and be the best we can be. We have great innovators to thank - Elon Musk for Tesla and SpaceX, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak for Apple, Sergey Brin and Larry Page for Google, Zuckerberg for Facebook, Jeff Bezos for Amazon, Bill Gates for Microso...ft, and the list of great and innovative US companies seem endless. We are not a perfect nation and we definitely need continuous improvement socially and politically. I have lots of opportunities in our great nation that I can’t imagine be ever presented to me in other countries. I would rather be here in the US than any place in the world. This is not a statement to be construed as political or social but an admiration of how great USA is to me. #USA #greatnation See more

Art and Music are forms of communication. A painting or a photograph may imbue different moods and experiences to the viewer. Music tells myriad life stories from lyrics enhanced by tones and rhythm. Data analysis and stories, in a way, are similar to art and music. Consider the images of this post. The images are almost framed similarly with the exception of perspective one image shows the flow of the waterfall while the other image freezes the waterfall. Presentations ...of data have started to show similarities with creative minds. Analysts or presenters may unknowingly have some bias on data interpretation. As an example one analyst may present top line growing astronomically over 50% every month and trying to prove a marketing campaign has positive influence on revenue. However another analyst using the same dataset may present EBITDA dropping 5% every month and trying to prove a marketing campaign has negative influence on earnings. Changing perspective of data may be a great way to attract or appease an audience but communication of data based on facts is prudent. See more

BI or Data Analytics, in my world, is a collection and integration of data from multiple sources and visualization of data in tools such as Power BI, QLIK, and Tableau to name a few. Powerful insights are driven by quality of data, stories from data analysis, and prudent decisions from recommendations that are derived from data. I was recently asked by one of our clients to help guide the selection process for a BI tool. One of the things we encourage our clients is to list ...features that are important to users’ day-to-day job. Every user wants the ability to export to Excel from a BI tool! No surprise there as I hear the same story in every client we work with. Data analysis using BI Tools is supposed to immerse users with data from multiple sources and get some insights all within a tool. Culturally, a lot of users have created their own reporting system be it in Excel, Access or other tools and processes the users built over the years. Thus, exporting Excel has always been an important feature so users can continue using their own processes. Maybe it’s time to assess and include users’ dataset and provide some guidance and governance to collaborate/corroborate efforts to answer business questions consistently across the organization. #data #analytics

Life throws us a lot of curve balls. All predictions and data analysis in the first quarter of 2020 have been thrown out the window. How can anyone have predicted COVID-19 will impact the world severely. It would be easier if all we ever deal with is a straight line in analytics. As such, linear regression is the only forecasting method we’ll ever use. An increase or decrease in an input variable produces an expected output value. Unfortunately life, the economy, and busi...ness cycles are not about straight lines. Beyond a few data points that we can focus on near term is a very complex world. Does our data curve up, down , cycle through certain months? Do interruptions from new competitive products or start ups keep us awake? How can executives make business decisions with complex data? Curve fitting is a process of formulating math functions or creating a curve line that best fit your data. A first degree polynomial is the most basic form that creates a line between 2 points. 2nd , 3rd, or even 4th degree polynomials will produce different curves with multiple data points. Explaining statistics, R, etc is very complex. If you have data and want to make sense out of your data, please reach out to me. #data #analytics #forecasting

A picture is worth a thousand words, right? A story about a picture piques interest and leaves the viewer wanting more about how the picture relates to the photographer, viewer, or anyone else in their lives. Below is a picture of Lake Las Vegas condos by the Village at Montelago ... A story can be a nice scene, picturesque, potential water activities and the serenity is very inviting. But another story is behind the condos is a desolate village with lots of shops closed, a h...otel and casino that has been a ghost town, and the only shop open when the picture was taken is a small grocery store. Bias is prevalent in our lives. Our religion, political affiliation, and family influence how we see the world. Do you view the world as half full or half empty? When doing fiction stories, the author dictates the beginning and ending of a story. And even so, as readers, we interpret the author’s story and our interpretations are influenced by our biases. Data stories on analytics can be subjective depending on the bias of the analyst that collected, analyzed the data, and concluded the outcome. Consider a poll for a candidate where the approval rating is 40% negative, 20% undecided and 40% positive. Based on the numbers for the candidate, we don’t have enough data to predict whether the candidate has a positive or negative approval rating. But a story for a pro candidate can include the undecided and claim the candidate may have a very high approval rating (20% undecided can go in the candidate’s favor). On the flip side of the story is the candidate has more than half that don’t approve of the candidate. Influencing outcomes is another problem I see in analytics. Consider a fictional study where if I want to influence chocolate sales, I can get healthy individuals who work out obsessively everyday and limit my participants to 4 so I get to influence the outcome of the study. I can have my 4 individuals eat a couple of chocolate bars a day and if I have 3 out of 4 in my sample study not gain weight in 2 weeks, I can claim that 75% who eat chocolates for 2 weeks did not gain weight!

It’s time to set sail again as states slowly lift restrictions and businesses jump start operations. Rough seas ahead but I’m hoping everyone makes it through. Technology has faired better than others so far but there’s still a lot of uncertainty. #allforone #oneforall

It is interesting to note that after decades of Data Warehouse and Business Intelligence solutions built, I still see a common and fundamental process missed - What is the Business Question(s)? Our team is commissioned by senior management to assess Data Analytics’ projects. Unfortunately a lot of data integration and visualization projects fail from budget overruns, scope creep, poor user adaptation, and the list goes on. We need to pause and rethink what we need to build. Without knowing business questions we are trying to answer with our data and visualization solutions, we are lost at sea in the middle of the night not knowing where to go. #data #analytics #businessquestion
